Zach Werenski made history for the Columbus Blue Jackets, extending his point streak to nine games with an assist against the New York Islanders. This achievement marks the longest point streak by a defenceman in Blue Jackets franchise history.

Werenski, a reigning gold-medal Olympian with Team USA, now has 44 assists this season, fourth most among NHL defencemen. His latest assist helped set up Mason Marchment's 14th goal, putting the Blue Jackets up 2-0.

Werenski is on fire. He's got two goals and 10 assists in his last nine games, and his 20 goals this season put him second among defensemen, just behind Jakob Chychrun's 22. Only two D-men have hit 20+ goals this season - Werenski and Chychrun.

Update: “Werenski would go on to record his 45th assist of the season and the second of the game after setting up Adam Fantilli for his 15th goal of the year. The goal tied things up 3-3 with the Islanders, who scored three straight following Marchment's goal.”

Zach Werenski's rise to prominence was gradual. After being drafted eighth overall in 2015, he debuted for the Blue Jackets the following year and impressed with 11 goals and 36 assists in 78 games at just 19, finishing third in Calder Memorial Trophy voting and earning All-Rookie honors.

However, it took a few seasons for Werenski to truly hit his stride. He's now showing his peak form, with 20 goals this season, putting him among the top defensemen in the NHL.
