Holger Rune, the Danish tennis star, is reportedly “really scared” after getting caught in Doha, Qatar, amidst Iranian missile attacks and explosions that have put the city in a state of emergency. He was supposed to fly to Los Angeles on Sunday at 7:40 a.m. but is now stranded due to airspace closures and widespread disruptions.
Rune's mother, Aneke, described the situation as a “wild night” with visible missile activity and repeated explosions across the skyline. She's quoted saying Holger was “really scared” and they didn't get much sleep. The team is currently awaiting confirmation on when commercial travel can safely resume.
Holger Rune is currently stuck in Qatar's capital, where explosions were heard early Sunday morning, adding to the worry for his team. The Danish tennis star is recovering from an Achilles tendon injury at the Aspetar sports hospital.
His mother and manager, Aneke Rune, described the past 24 hours as “worrying” for the team, according to TV2 Sport.
“It's been a wild night. We didn't get much sleep. It all seems more brutal at night with the fireballs in the sky and repeated bangs. We spent quite a bit of time at the reception, and they were super sweet, so we finally went to our rooms and slept. But Holger was really scared last night. After all, it pours in with brutal news and images of attacks everywhere around us. Our flight is, of course, canceled today, and we now have no idea when we can get out,” says Anneke Rune.
The US and Israel's attacks on Iran on Saturday morning have led to retaliatory strikes by Iran against US bases in the Middle East, including Qatar, where Holger Rune is currently staying. The Qatari Ministry of Interior reports that eight people were injured in an Iranian attack on Sunday, bringing the total number of injured to 16. The ministry also states that there is limited material damage and advises citizens to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
Iran's attacks are part of a broader retaliatory campaign following the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in US-Israeli strikes. Qatar's airspace and territorial waters have been closed, and public events have been suspended.
