Mauricio Pochettino Commits To USMNT Until 2030 World Cup

United States head coach Mauricio Pochettino has agreed to stay with the men's team through the 2030 World Cup, U.S. Soccer announced on Monday. He guided the team to the Round of 16 at this year’s tournament.

The 54-year-old Argentine is known for a high-pressing, attacking style. Pochettino took charge of the USMNT in 2024 after leaving Chelsea earlier that year, and his previous deal was set to expire after the 2026 World Cup.

“Mauricio and his staff believe in the future of soccer in the United States and our new project allows us to build on progress of the USMNT and the momentum of U.S. Soccer,” US Soccer CEO JT Batson said in a press release.

Under Pochettino, the US topped their World Cup group ahead of Australia, Paraguay and Turkey. Their 6 points set a new record for the most points by the men’s team in a single World Cup.

Pochettino’s side then knocked out Bosnia in the Round of 32, but their run ended with a 4-1 loss to Belgium. It was a disappointing finish for a team hoping to go deep on home soil.

“Working together with U.S. Soccer over the past two years, it has become clear to us that there is tremendous potential to make the Men’s National Team program even stronger,” said Pochettino.

“The passion we experienced from the fans throughout the World Cup only strengthened our belief in what is possible here.”

The former Argentina defender took Southampton to 8th in the Premier League in 2013 - a club record at the time.

He later led Tottenham Hotspur to their first Champions League final in 2019, and won Ligue 1 with Paris St Germain in 2022.

Pochettino and Chelsea parted ways by mutual consent in 2024. Despite a strong finish that pushed them to 6th, his single season at Stamford Bridge was a turbulent one.
