Washington Open: Rain washes out Washington Open Championship matches until Monday. Eala eyes career-best ranking.

Jessica Pegula and breakout star Alexandra Eala will have to wait until Monday to crown a Washington Open champion after thunderstorms forced a postponement of Sunday’s WTA final.

Following a three-hour delay to begin the match, world No. 3 Pegula took the opener 6-4. Eala was up 2-1 in the second set when the rain came back.

With conditions still unplayable after more than five hours, organizers decided to suspend play and resume the final on Monday.

The men’s final was also pushed back at the WTA and ATP 500 hardcourt event in Washington. 10th-ranked American Taylor Fritz is due to face 19-year-old Spaniard Rafael Jodar.

Play will restart Monday at 12 p.m. local time, 4:00 p.m. GMT, with the women’s final first. The men’s final is scheduled to start no earlier than 1 p.m. in Washington.

Pegula lifted her first WTA title in Washington back in 2019. She’s now chasing her 12th career trophy and third this season, after wins in Dubai and Charleston.

The 32-year-old top seed beat Eala in their only previous match, a 2025 Miami semi-final.

Due to continuing rain, play has been canceled for today.

Philippines standout Eala, backed all week by a loud group of supporters, is chasing her first WTA title in just her second career final. She lost the other one last year in Eastbourne.

The 21-year-old lefty is projected to climb to a new career-high of world No. 24.

Eala reached the final by knocking off former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka, No. 2 seed Elina Svitolina, and defending champion Leylah Fernandez.

Pegula broke for 3-2 with a big forehand return winner, but Eala answered immediately, breaking back to love at 3-3 with a blistering backhand return winner.

Pegula fended off two break points to hold for 4-4, then broke again when Eala sent a forehand long in the ninth game. She wrapped up the first set in 40 minutes by holding to love after Eala fired a backhand long.

The players were on serve and heading to a changeover when the rain came back.

In the 53 minutes of play before the delay, Pegula hit 14 winners to Eala’s 4, while both players committed 20 unforced errors.

In the men’s final, Fritz is going for his 11th ATP title and his first since winning at Eastbourne last year.

Jodar is already set to rise to a career-best No. 15 in next week’s rankings. He’ll be chasing his second ATP trophy after taking the title in Morocco back in April.
