The Yankees acquired Luis Garcia Jr. from the Nationals for 4 pitchers. The 26-year-old is hitting .283 with 23 HR and a NL-best .560 SLG.

The New York Yankees added infielder Luis Garcia Jr. from the Washington Nationals on Sunday as the MLB trade deadline ramps up. In return, Washington received pitchers Yovanny Cruz, Jake Bird, Ben Grable, and Jack Cebert.

Garcia, 26, was pulled from Washington’s lineup Sunday before the game vs. the Atlanta Braves. The seven-year veteran has played his whole career with the Nationals and is having the best season of his career so far.

The left-handed hitter is batting a career-high .283 with a NL-best .560 slugging percentage. For the first time in his career he’s topping an .800 OPS, sitting at .873. He’s already blown past his 2024 bests with 23 homers and 76 RBI - up from 18 and 70 last year.

 

Garcia won’t hit arbitration until 2027, and he isn’t slated to reach free agency until the 2028 season.

Garcia debuted in 2020, and the power didn’t show up right away. Over his first four seasons he hit over .265 three times, but he stayed in single digits for homers and never topped 50 RBI.

In fairness, he also didn’t play 100 games in a season until 2024. Now he joins the Yankees at 62-49, where New York will plug his hot bat into the lineup for a push toward the World Series.

What Washington Gets Back

Right-hander Yovanny Cruz, 26, has made four appearances for the Yankees this year. He’s allowed just one run on three hits with six strikeouts across 5.1 innings. 

At Triple-A this season, Cruz has been solid in 31 outings, posting a 3.53 ERA with 52 strikeouts in 35.2 innings.

Jake Bird, 30, is the most experienced arm in the deal. He’s struggled to a 5.93 ERA in 36 games this year, and he’s never posted a season ERA under 4.30 in his career.

Ben Grable, 24, is ranked as the Yankees' No.15 prospect. He’s put up a 2.45 ERA with 56 strikeouts in 36.2 innings this year, split between six appearances in High-A and 26 in Double-A.

Jack Cebert is also 24 and comes in at No.14 in New York’s system. He owns a 4.03 ERA with 96 strikeouts in 82.2 innings at those same levels - three games, with two starts, in High-A and 13 games, 12 of them starts, in Double-A.
