T20 World Cup Semi-Final, India vs England - Gambhir sounds alarm

India coach Gautam Gambhir warns England is 'dangerous and growing in confidence' ahead of T20 World Cup semi-final at Wankhede Stadium. Can India overcome England's momentum?

“We all know that playing at the Wankhede is a tough game, but it's another opportunity to do something special for...”

India's head coach Gautam Gambhir praised Sanju Samson for his match-winning 97 against West Indies, saying it was a “special” innings that kept India's T20 World Cup hopes alive. However, Gambhir warned that India will need another “special effort” to beat England in the semi-final on March 5 at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium.

Gambhir highlighted England's strong spin attack, led by Adil Rashid, Liam Dawson, and Will Jacks, as a key challenge for India. He also emphasized the importance of adapting to Wankhede's conditions, which differ from Eden Gardens.

Sanju Samson only played one group stage game, against Namibia, where he scored 22 runs. India had been using a double left-hand opening combination with Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma, but Samson was brought back into the side for the Super Eights match against Zimbabwe to provide a right-handed option at the top of the order.

Samson's inclusion paid off, as he made 24 runs off 15 balls, helping India post a massive total of 256-4 against Zimbabwe. His aggressive start also gave Abhishek Sharma time to settle and eventually score a half-century.

Sanju Samson's unbeaten 97 off 50 balls, laced with 12 fours and four sixes, steered India to a thrilling 5-wicket win over West Indies, securing their spot in the T20 World Cup semifinals. Coach Gautam Gambhir praised Samson's performance, saying, “We all know how good a player Sanju is.”

Gambhir's faith in Samson paid off, as the wicket-keeper batter delivered when it mattered most. Samson's knock not only showcased his skill but also his ability to handle pressure, helping India chase down a stiff target of 196.

“It was all about backing him, and when the team needed him the most.

“Obviously, today was the day when he probably showed his full potential.

“I have always said that he is a world-class player. He is a great talent, and hopefully he can kick on from now, and we can see a lot more innings like this.”

India is gearing up for a thrilling semi-final clash against England at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. England, led by Harry Brook, has been on a roll, winning all their Super Eight matches and showing impressive improvement as the tournament nears its climax.

England's spinners, including Adil Rashid and Liam Dawson, are expected to play a crucial role in disrupting India's rhythm, especially on Wankhede's turning track. India's bowling unit, led by Varun Chakravarthy and Jasprit Bumrah, is strong, but their fielding needs improvement after dropping 13 catches.

India's coach Gautam Gambhir knows England will be tough opponents in the semi-finals. “Look, they're a world-class team, they're a quality team, they've got a lot of quality players as well,” Gambhir said, highlighting England's strength.

The Wankhede Stadium's conditions will be a new challenge for India, differing from Kolkata's Eden Gardens, where they played their last match. Gambhir emphasized adapting to these conditions will be crucial for India's success against England.

“We all know that playing at the Wankhede is a tough game, but it's another opportunity to do something special for the team and for the country.

“Hopefully, we play our best game, that is going to be very important, and we can keep ticking all the boxes.”

Gautam Gambhir warned that India needs to give it their all against England, saying they're “dangerous and growing in confidence.” With the Wankhede Stadium's conditions differing from Eden Gardens, India will have to be on top of their game to progress to the final in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

“That is going to be important,” Gambhir said.

“Because we will need a special effort to beat a quality side like England.”
