Manchester United’s Tyler Fletcher has earned a late call-up to Scotland’s World Cup squad. The midfielder replaces injured Billy Gilmour despite missing Steve Clarke’s original standby list.
The 20-year-old is the son of former Scotland captain Darren Fletcher. He spent the past week training with Clarke’s squad as one of several young players brought in to work with the group.
The 19-year-old came off the bench for his Scotland debut in the second half of Saturday’s 4-1 friendly win against Curacao.
Connor Barron from Rangers, Udinese’s Lennon Miller, and Sparta Prague’s Andy Irving were the midfielders Clarke originally named to his standby list.
Clarke went with Fletcher anyway, even though the United youngster has only 17 minutes of senior club football to his name so far.
“I had to disappoint another three players this morning again, to tell them that they had missed out,” said Clarke.
“I just felt Tyler came into the squad this week and showed up really well, did well in the game so that was the thinking behind that one.
“Obviously devastated for Billy and also really disappointed for Lennon, Andy Irving and Connor Barron.”
Scotland head to the United States on Sunday as they ramp up World Cup prep.
