Benfica boss dismisses Real Madrid coaching links

The Benfica manager led Madrid from 2010 to 2013 and is reportedly on their shortlist to replace Alvaro Arbeloa.

Benfica manager Jose Mourinho said on Friday that Real Madrid have not contacted him, dismissing speculation linking him to the Spanish club this summer.

The Portuguese coach, who managed Los Blancos from 2010 to 2013 during a fierce rivalry with Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona, is reportedly on Madrid’s shortlist for the next head coach.

Current boss Alvaro Arbeloa looks likely to depart, with Madrid set to finish a second straight season without a major trophy.

“No one from Real Madrid has spoken to me. I can guarantee that,” Mourinho, 63, told reporters.

“I've been in football for so many years, and I'm used to these things... but there's nothing from Real Madrid,” added Mourinho, who guided Real to the 2012 LaLiga title.

Florentino Perez brought in Alvaro Arbeloa as Real Madrid manager in January after Xabi Alonso’s short spell in charge ended after just a few months.

Real Madrid sit 11 points behind LaLiga leaders Barcelona with five games left, and were eliminated from the Champions League by Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.

“I have a year to go on my Benfica contract, and that's all,” Mourinho said, noting that his side lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League play-off round in February.

Mourinho said there has been no contact from Real Madrid amid speculation about the club’s next manager.
