Game Breakdown

The game turned into a physical, fast-paced battle. Dallas opened the scoring on the power play.

After Jonas Brodin was called for tripping, Mikko Rantanen needed just 20 seconds with the man advantage to put the Stars up 1-0.

Dallas got another power play eight minutes later after Nick Foligno was called for holding. They didn’t convert, but struck at even strength two minutes after it expired.

Jason Robertson buried his third goal of the playoffs to make it 2-0. Matt Duchene picked up his second assist of the night and third of the postseason on the play.

Minnesota refused to fold after falling behind by two.

On their first power play, Marcus Johansson got the Wild on the board with his first goal of the playoffs. It cut Dallas’ lead to 2-1 heading into the first intermission.

The teams were even in shots through 20 minutes, with nine apiece.

Five minutes into the second, Minnesota erased the deficit and tied it up.

Joel Eriksson Ek notched his third goal of the playoffs to make it 2-2, finishing off slick feeds from Matthew Boldy and Quinn Hughes.

Hughes extended his point streak to three games - the longest ever by a Wild defenseman to open a playoff round. Minnesota acquired him in a trade earlier this season.

Eriksson Ek was in the middle of the penalty chaos all night. He took a Jason Robertson high-stick late in the first, then drew a hooking call on Jamie Benn after his goal.

The sequence ended when Esa Lindell was whistled for roughing Eriksson Ek, after the Wild forward slashed Dallas goalie Jake Oettinger.

Ryan Hartman took consecutive penalties, and Matthew Boldy followed with another. That gave Dallas its third, fourth, and fifth power plays of the night, but the Stars came up empty on all three.

Seconds after Dallas’ fifth power play expired, Minnesota took the lead. Michael McCarron scored his first goal of the playoffs to make it 3-2 Wild.

In the third, Minnesota had two power plays to add to the lead and couldn’t cash in. It cost them.

Matt Duchene buried his second goal of the playoffs off a patient feed from Rantanen, tying it 3-3 and sending the game to overtime.
