Anthony Gordon to Bayern? How Newcastle’s Season Could Decide His Future

Kompany’s eye on Gordon

Anthony Gordon’s future may hinge on Newcastle’s final six games. Without European football, Bayern Munich could pounce for the 25-year-old who leads the Magpies in goals, shots on target, and big chances created.

Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany is tracking Anthony Gordon...

With Newcastle likely to miss out on a top-seven Premier League finish this season, there’s a real chance the Magpies won’t have European football in 2026/27.

Newcastle’s European hopes hanging by a thread

Right now, the Magpies sit five points behind Brentford in seventh for the Conference League spot, six off Chelsea in sixth for Europa League qualification, and 10 behind Liverpool in fifth for the final Champions League place.

A strong end to the season is essential if they want any shot at another European run. Falling short could create major issues.

One of those issues could be losing their Champions League top scorer, Anthony Gordon.

The former Everton winger has attracted transfer links before, but he’s stayed on Tyneside so far.

Missing out on European football won’t be ignored by him or his teammates, though. Especially if they want to hold onto their spots with their national teams.

If Newcastle finish outside the Premier League’s top seven, that might lower the player’s price. But club CEO David Hopkinson won’t let the Magpies be pushed around in the transfer market.

Gordon leads Newcastle’s attack – and the transfer shortlists

It’s easy to see why Bayern and other clubs are tracking the 25-year-old, and Hopkinson’s stance hints that some players could be sold.

In 2025/26, Gordon has 46 appearances in all competitions with 17 goals and five assists, plus three efforts off the woodwork. No one in the Newcastle squad has more goal involvements.

“We think through what players might or might not want to do this summer,” he was quoted as saying back in March. “But if an Isak-like scenario presents itself again, any player under contract is going to leave on our terms, and we’re going to maximise the opportunity that might represent for the club.

“Going forward, our strategy is to buy well and sell well.”

All 17 of his goals have come from inside the box, 15 with his right foot, and his 62.1% shot accuracy leads the squad.

Only Nick Woltemade has a better conversion rate at 20.8% compared to Gordon’s 19.5%. His 10 fast breaks are just one behind Harvey Barnes, with the duo the only players to reach double figures there.

No Newcastle player tops the winger’s 41 shots on target or 31 big chances created. He converts 51.6% of big chances, the team’s best rate, and he’s perfect from the spot with nine penalties scored from nine.

Areas to sharpen if Gordon joins Bayern’s stars

His 81.8% pass completion rate is solid, but it’s only average compared to other Newcastle players. That’s one part of his game he’d have to improve to thrive in a Bayern squad full of elite talent.

He never backs down from a duel. Only six Magpies have been involved in more one-on-ones than Gordon’s 318, and his 63% tackle success rate - 17 wins from 27 attempts - ranks him inside the top 10.

In a team as expansive as Bayern, it’s easy to picture Gordon adapting quickly.

Without carrying most of the goalscoring burden, he could focus on his natural game and build a club and country partnership with Harry Kane that would benefit both players.

For now, Gordon and the entire Newcastle first-team setup have to push as hard as possible to secure European football.

Bournemouth, Arsenal, Brighton, Nottingham Forest, West Ham, and Fulham are the obstacles between them and a respectable end to the season, considering where they are.

Six games that could shape not just Gordon’s future, but the entire direction Newcastle take as a club.
