Japan pulled off a thrilling 4-3 win over Australia, securing top spot in Pool C and advancing to the knockout stages of the World Baseball Classic in the US. Masataka Yoshida's clutch two-run homer in the seventh inning sparked the comeback, breaking a scoreless tie and giving Japan the lead.

Australia had taken the lead in the sixth inning with Aaron Whitefield scoring on a throwing error by Japan's catcher Kenya Wakatsuki. However, Yoshida's timely hit turned the game around, and Japan added two more runs in the eighth inning to seal the victory. The Aussies fought back with solo homers from Alex Hall and Rixon Wingrove in the ninth, but it wasn't enough to snatch the win.

The Aussies were flying high after Aaron Whitfield's sixth-inning run, sparked by an errant throw. Japan struggled early, managing just three hits, while starter Connor MacDonald was on fire, tossing three shutout innings with just one hit allowed. Whitfield's score had the Aussies dreaming of an upset against Pool C giants Japan.

But Japan wasn't having it, and they were ready to turn the game around.

Masataka Yoshida was the hero of the game, hitting a massive two-run homer that traveled 394 feet, putting Japan in control. This pivotal blow came in the seventh inning, turning the game around for Japan.

In the eighth inning, pinch hitter Terauki Sato came off the bench and delivered, spraying a double down the left field line and scoring Sosuke Genda from third, giving Japan a two-run lead. The momentum continued as Japan loaded the bases, and Seiya Suzuki drew a walk, forcing in another run and making it 4-1.

Australia made a late push, with Alex Hall and Rixon Wingrove hitting solo homers in the ninth, but it wasn't enough to snatch the win. The Aussies will regroup and face South Korea on Monday in what feels like a must-win game.

The match against South Korea is likely to be intense, with the winner securing a spot in the quarterfinals.

Japan's got a dead rubber against the Czech Republic on Tuesday, and they're likely to give Shohei Ohtani a rest after his hitless game against Australia. The team's gonna rotate players for this one.

South Korea Falls to Chinese Taipei in Thrilling Extra-Innings Loss

Meanwhile, Chinese Taipei picked up their second straight win, beating South Korea 5-4 in a thrilling extra-innings game earlier on Sunday in Tokyo.

After falling to Australia and Japan earlier in the tournament, Chinese Taipei knew they had to beat today's opponents to have any chance of qualification from Pool C.

They came out swinging. Starman Yu Chang homered in the second inning to give them the lead, before South Korea replied, after a quiet start, in the fifth.

Shay Whitcomb's groundout was enough to bring Min Ahn home, tying the game for South Korea. But Chinese Taipei wasn't having it, and Tsung-Che Cheng's big homer put them back in the lead.

The game was a wild ride, with Kim Do-Yeong's big homer giving South Korea their first lead in the sixth. But Chinese Taipei had chances to level, and the drama didn't stop there - Shay Whitcomb hit a two-run homer, sending his team wild. Do-Yeong wasn't done, though, with an RBI double making it 4-4, and the game headed to extras.

Kun-Yu Chiang's clutch bunt in the 10th inning brought the runner home, giving Chinese Taipei a crucial lead. They held on to win 5-4, sparking huge celebrations and keeping their WBC dreams alive.
