Villarreal's 2-1 win over Elche strengthens their position in LaLiga's top four...

Villarreal strengthened their position in LaLiga's top four with a narrow 2-1 win over struggling Elche. This victory solidifies Villarreal's fourth-place standing, while Elche continues to struggle, still searching for their first away league win of the season and first success in 2026.

Elche's season has taken a disastrous turn after an unbeaten start to the season, with seven matches without a loss. Despite a promising start, they've failed to win away, earning them the title of joint-worst away side in Europe's top-five leagues.

Despite having several chances, they couldn't quite finish, with Buba Sangare's volley hitting the post. However, things took a turn in the 30th minute, and Georges Mikautadze's shot finally tested Elche goalkeeper Matias Dituro, setting the stage for the opening goal.

The momentum shifted dramatically, and it seemed like only a matter of time before the goal came.

Tajon Buchanan made a great break on the right-hand side, entered the area, and shifted onto his right foot to score a fantastic goal from a tight angle, sending the ball into the roof of the net. The hosts were on fire after that, and they deserved their second goal when Santi Comesana put Santiago Mourino into space in the area, allowing the Uruguayan to fire a similar shot goalward.

Villarreal looked comfortable and were pushing for a third goal early in the second half, but Elche started to gain momentum. It wasn't until the 70th minute that Elche really threatened, with Victor Chust's curling shot narrowly missing the target, thanks to a great save from Luiz Junior.

Elche gave it their all, and just under 10 minutes to go, Andre Silva scored a thrilling goal, flicking a near-post header into the net from Martim Neto's corner. This sparked a desperate final push from Elche, but unfortunately, it wasn't enough to change the outcome, and Villarreal secured a 2-1 win.

This victory means Villarreal now has an 11-point lead over fifth spot, with Real Betis still to play this weekend. As a result, Villarreal is likely to qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the second consecutive time.

Another road defeat has pushed Elche's winless streak to 11 games, and their top-flight aspirations are now under serious threat. They're just one point away from the drop zone, a far cry from their promising start to the season.
