Fede Valverde was the hero as Real Madrid thumped Manchester City 3-0 in the Champions League round of 16 first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu. Valverde scored a stunning hat-trick, with his goals coming in the 20th, 27th, and 42nd minutes, leaving City with a daunting task ahead.

Real Madrid's dominance was evident, with 40% possession but 2.59 expected goals (xG) compared to City's 0.56. Valverde's performance was masterful, showcasing his energy, stamina, and perseverance. He became the second Real Madrid midfielder to score three goals in a single European Cup match, after Jose Martinez Pirri in 1968.

Headline: Real Madrid and Man City's History

Real Madrid and Manchester City had only met twice before their recent run of games - in the 2015/16 semi-finals and the 2012/13 group stage.

Ahead of Wednesday night's game, Real Madrid led the head-to-head 5-4, with five draws.

Matchup Stats

City's 16 points in the league phase were just enough to secure automatic knockout stage qualification, while Real Madrid's 15 points left them needing a play-off against Benfica. Real ultimately overcame Benfica, whose late win had pushed them out of the top eight initially.

Real Madrid's strong home record in the competition (4 wins, 1 loss) makes them tough opponents for Man City, even without injured Kylian Mbappe. Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola's side is on a four-match away unbeaten streak.

Early Dominance

The opening exchanges were relatively equal, with Madrid firing off three attempts and City two in the first 18 minutes. But Real Madrid's attack gained momentum, and City's defense looked vulnerable. Thibaut Courtois' long clearance found Fede Valverde, setting up the breakthrough.

Brilliant Valverde

Fede Valverde scored a beauty, taking Courtois' clearance, beating Nico O'Reilly with a great touch, and chipping past Donnarumma into an empty net. Valverde's first UCL goal since April 2024 - and it was against Man City.

Fede Valverde's dominance was evident as he scored his second goal, a superb left-foot shot, just seven minutes after opening the scoring. This goal showcased City's struggles to contain Brahim Diaz and Vinicius Junior's attacking moves. Valverde's performance was impressive, with only four touches in City's box throughout the 90 minutes, yet he managed to make a significant impact.

Ruben Dias and Marc Guehi struggled, making just one tackle attempt each and losing both, with only one interception between them. They did manage eight of City's 10 clearances, but it was a panic-driven effort as they were under pressure for much of the game.

Haaland Struggles

Erling Haaland was off the pace, with no shots and only nine touches in the first half, one touch in Real's box before being substituted. Antoine Semenyo was City's standout attacker, with two on-target shots and impressive work rate, outpacing Haaland.

Fede Valverde was on fire, attempting more tackles than anyone else on the pitch with four, and scoring a hat-trick goal with his third shot on target. City's defense was all over the place, and that's a major concern for Guardiola. Valverde's performance was incredible, showcasing his skill and determination.

City's Lack of Edge

City struggled with one-on-one duels, with only Rodri winning more than half (7/11). Despite 75% possession in the final 15 minutes, they failed to capitalize, showing a lack of commitment in their crucial game.

City had 72% possession at the start of the second half, yet they struggled to contain Vinicius, who was given space to run into City's area. Donnarumma's challenge stopped him, earning a penalty, but Vini's weak spot-kick was saved, a potentially crucial moment in the game. Valverde's masterful performance overshadowed Vini's efforts, but his attacking output was still impressive.

City's Defensive Lovers

Guardiola's subs, Cherki, Marmoush, and Reijnders, failed to make an impact, with no tackles or interceptions between them. Real Madrid led 2-0, and City's struggles continued.

Jeremy Doku was City's most active attacker, with 16 touches in Real's box, but his lone shot was blocked. Real Madrid's scoring record is impressive, having scored in 10 of 11 games, making it tough for City to turn things around.

City has a strong record at the Etihad, losing only one of their previous seven meetings there, which could give them a boost heading into the return leg. Scoring early could be crucial for Guardiola's side, as it might shift the momentum in their favor.
