Federico Valverde's stunning hat-trick gives Real Madrid a commanding lead over Man City in the UCL...

Federico Valverde was on fire, scoring a stunning hat-trick as Real Madrid cruised to a 3-0 win over Man City. The Real captain's sensational performance gave Los Blancos a huge advantage heading into the second leg.

Real Madrid had a psychological edge, having knocked City out of the UCL in the previous two campaigns. They looked sharp and determined, and Valverde's hat-trick was the icing on the cake.

Man City started strong, but Jeremy Doku's service didn't quite find a finisher. Real Madrid soon found their rhythm, and Federico Valverde ended the visitors' spell with a brilliant goal.

Valverde latched onto Thibaut Courtois' long ball, beat Nico O'Reilly and Gianluigi Donnarumma with a clever toe-poke, and found the empty net. The Uruguay star was off and running.

Valverde continued to shine, scoring his second just before the half-hour mark. Vinicius Junior's reverse ball allowed the Uruguayan to strike across goal and into the bottom corner with his left foot, leaving the keeper no chance.

The hat-trick was a beauty: Brahim Diaz chipped the ball into the box, and Valverde flicked it over Marc Guehi, tapping it past Donnarumma to complete his trilogy. A sensational performance from the Real Madrid captain.

With their 11-match unbeaten run all but at an end, things could easily have got worse for City in the exchanges after the break.

Vinícius Júnior broke away and was taken down as he tried to go around Donnarumma, but was thwarted from the spot when the City goalkeeper jumped to his left to keep out his penalty.

The hosts kept the pressure on in the latter minutes, although they had Courtois to thank for making a stunning reflex save to divert over, after O’Reilly pickpocketed Thiago Pitarch in the area.

There was also a brief resurgence from City in the final moments, but they ultimately didn’t trouble the scoresheet for the first time since mid-January.

City will need a miracle to turn this around. They'll be looking to replicate their 2023 4-0 home win, which was their last victory over Real in a two-legged tie.

This result is a huge boost for Real Madrid, who've struggled recently. But Alvaro Arbeloa knows the job isn't done yet – they'll be looking to keep their Champions League hopes alive.
