Chinese Grand Prix: George Russell leads Mercedes charge against Ferrari. Can George Russell maintain momentum in Chinese Grand Prix?

Mercedes driver George Russell eyes Ferrari threat in Shanghai...

George Russell, the current F1 leader, downplayed the championship talk, saying “the championship means nothing at this point” as Mercedes prepares for the Chinese Grand Prix. He led the season-opener in Melbourne, securing a 1-2 finish with teammate Kimi Antonelli.

Russell had begun the campaign as a favorite to win his maiden world championship, and his dominant performance in Australia has only fueled those expectations. However, he's taking a cautious approach, focusing on the present rather than the championship title.

The Australian Grand Prix marked a new era for Formula 1, with significant rule changes, including a 50-50 split between conventional and electrical power. Mercedes was touted as the team to beat, but George Russell was cautious not to gace too triumphant heading into the Chinese Grand Prix.

Russell, who won the Australian Grand Prix, believes Mercedes still needs to raise their game, citing areas where they underachieved, particularly in the race start and battery management. The new regulations have introduced a more strategic element to racing, with drivers needing to carefully manage their energy deployment.

The reaction to the new rules has been mixed, with some drivers, like Lewis Hamilton, praising the changes, while others, like Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, have expressed concerns about safety and the authenticity of the racing. The Chinese Grand Prix will be a crucial test for the teams, with a different track layout and a sprint race format.

“It feels no different to any other day, to be honest, here in China,” the 28-year-old said in Shanghai.

“Preparing as usual, going about my business as usual.

"I'm most happy about the fact that the car is quick and reacting as we think.

"There's still room to improve and that's what I'm most pleased about.

"A championship means nothing at this point.”

George Russell, the winner of the Australian Grand Prix, thinks Ferrari will be Mercedes' closest competitor this season. He shared this view with his teammate Lewis Hamilton, who finished fourth in Melbourne behind Charles Leclerc in third.

Russell's confidence stems from Ferrari's strong performance in Australia, where they pushed Mercedes hard, especially in the early laps. Ferrari's decision not to pit during virtual safety car periods ultimately cost them, but they still showed promising pace.

George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, former teammates at Mercedes, shared a flight to Shanghai and discussed the season's prospects. Russell thinks Ferrari is their main rival, but warned “it's not only Ferrari” posing a threat, eyeing Red Bull and McLaren too.

“My view is a lot of teams didn't optimise qualifying. I think we did a really great job of qualifying,” he said, having started the Albert Park race from pole.

"But I think Sunday showed the true pace. And, you know, when you look at Ferrari... they were basically doing the same lap times as us.”
