| Solanke speaks out on Madrid debacle |
Tottenham Hotspur's Dominic Solanke describes his team's 5-2 loss to Atletico Madrid as a 'one-in-a-million occurrence.’ Solanke scores in Spurs' 5-2 defeat, offering a glimmer of hope for the second leg.
Spurs' shocking start to the Champions League match against Atletico Madrid was unforeseeable, says Solanke...
Tottenham Hotspur's disappointing performance against Atletico Madrid was a rare occurrence, according to forward Dominic Solanke. The team conceded three goals in the first 15 minutes, with two of those goals resulting from mistakes made by goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky, who was subsequently substituted.
Solanke described the circumstances as “one in a million,” stating that it's hard to prepare for such an unusual start to a game. Despite the tough beginning, Solanke believes the team can take positives from the match and look forward to the second leg in London.
Tottenham's struggles continued as Antonin Kinsky was substituted off in the 17th minute against Atletico Madrid due to two costly mistakes, including a slip that led to the first goal and a stray pass for the third. Manager Igor Tudor faced intense scrutiny after losing all four games since taking over as interim manager.
Despite the pressure, Tudor will remain in charge for Sunday's match against Liverpool, where Tottenham aims to break a seven-game losing streak in all competitions. A loss would push them closer to the relegation zone, currently just one point above the bottom three.
“Obviously the first 20 minutes was difficult, very difficult circumstances which are one in a million,” Solanke told Sky Sports on Thursday. “You never prepare for that. You prepare all week to go into a game, have a game plan and then stuff like that can happen, which is rare.
“That gave us a bit of mountain to climb, but I think overall, we try to take some positives. We know we've still got another game.”
Tottenham's chances took a hit after conceding five goals against Atletico Madrid, with Micky van de Ven's slip contributing to their second goal. Despite a late comeback, they lost 5-2, with Dominic Solanke's goal offering some hope for the second leg in London. Solanke admitted it was tough to recover from such a poor start.
Tottenham's struggles are evident, and they're currently 16th in the Premier League table, just above West Ham United and Nottingham Forest.
“We've been so good in the Champions League this year but we know we haven't been anywhere near good enough in the league,” Solanke said. “It's hard to put a finger on it, just changing one thing. I think we need to be better in every department. We're trying to stay positive and want to change it around.
“We need to be brave, we need to be strong and have full belief.”
Tottenham's struggling in the Premier League, currently 16th with just one point above West Ham United and Nottingham Forest.
