Tottenham Owners Promise Overhaul After Narrowly Escaping Relegation Again
| Spurs owners vow to fix 'serious challenges' after survival on final day |
The Lewis family and Vinai Venkatesham address fans after Tottenham stayed up for the second year running, with rebuild plans now in motion.
“Finishing 17th this and last season does not reflect the stature or potential of this football club...”
Tottenham’s majority owners say they’re “bitterly disappointed” with the club’s recent form and have promised fresh investment and a rebuild to turn things around after narrowly avoiding Premier League relegation for two years running.
A 1-0 home win over Everton on the final day sealed Spurs’ safety, leaving them 17th - one spot above the drop - for the second season in a row. They stayed up by just two points.
The 2025/26 campaign was another slog for Spurs, with three managers coming and going in one season - a run that left fans furious.
Much of that anger has been aimed at majority owners ENIC, controlled by the Lewis family, and CEO Vinai Venkatesham.
In September, long-time chairman Daniel Levy was asked to step aside after nearly 25 years as Spurs’ main decision-maker.
In an open letter to supporters on Wednesday, the Lewis family said they were “bitterly disappointed” with how things have gone, but insisted a rebuild is already underway under current head coach Roberto De Zerbi.
“Finishing 17th this and last season does not reflect the stature or potential of this football club. We are bitterly disappointed and share your frustration.
“You, and we, expect more than this. We know this must never happen again.”
The statement added: “We also take responsibility for rebuilding Spurs. Our ambition is to recapture the spirit of the club and bring back the excitement, the fearlessness and the bold football we have always felt defined us.
“That means football comes first... This will require investment - in our teams, the academy, our backroom functions and more - and we are fully committed to this.
“We are not selling the club. We are all in. We are investing in it. You will see more of this in the coming months... We know that actions will speak louder than words.”
Venkatesham arrived at Spurs from bitter rivals Arsenal, who added to Tottenham’s frustration by clinching this season’s Premier League title.
By comparison, Tottenham’s last English league title came in 1960/61, the same season they lifted the FA Cup to complete a famous double.
Venkatesham admitted it was a difficult first year at Spurs but said to the BBC: “The club had some serious challenges that it needs to address on the football side. We know what those are. We are addressing them. We are fixing them.”
