Holger Rune’s comeback hit by another setback. Rune withdraws from Cincinnati as comeback delayed again.

From Hamburg to Cincinnati, Holger Rune’s injury woes continue...

Holger Rune’s return to the ATP Tour has been pushed back once again after he pulled out of the Cincinnati tournament. The Dane was initially set to play there following an Achilles tendon injury suffered at last year’s Stockholm Open.

Rune, who hasn’t played since October due to the injury, was still on the Cincinnati entry list until Wednesday but has since been removed. His comeback has been delayed multiple times - he had first targeted the Hamburg Open in the spring, and later the French Open.

He later aimed to make his return during the grass-court swing, but that timeline was also too ambitious. Since then, the focus has shifted to the US Open in late August, though it’s still unclear if he’ll be fit in time.

On August 3, his mother and manager told SpilXperten that the main goal right now is to build up Holger Rune’s match fitness and stamina.

“It could take two or three weeks; it’s impossible to say right now. What we can say is that Holger is putting in maximum effort every day to make it happen quickly.”

Rune suffered an Achilles tendon tear during a semi-final at the Stockholm Open last October against French player Ugo Humbert. He has since been working through an intensive rehab program that included a stint in Qatar.

The Dane has slipped to No. 99 in the world rankings. However, with a “protected ranking he will still qualify for major tournaments when he returns to competition.
