Alexander Zverev kept his push for a first Grand Slam title on track with a straightforward win over an under-the-weather Tomas Machac in the French Open second round on Wednesday.
The German world No. 2 will meet Frenchman Quentin Halys on Friday for a spot in the second week at Roland Garros, after sealing a 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 victory in the night session on Court Philippe Chatrier.
“I'm happy where I am, I'm feeling confident in my game and moving forward, looking forward to hopefully being back on this court,” said Zverev.
World No. 43 Machac looked hampered on court and called for a lengthy medical timeout in the second set to get treatment on his left foot.
“I thought for one and a half sets it was an amazing level... unfortunately, the injury stopped the match flow a little bit.” added Zverev. “I'm happy to finish it in three sets.”
Zverev made the most of it with a commanding performance, fending off the only break point he faced and cruising past Machac in just 1 hour and 48 minutes.

Ranked world No. 3, he’s come closest to winning a maiden major in Paris, making the quarter-finals or better for five straight years. His deepest run ended in a five-set defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in the 2024 final.
