Nantes Thrash Marseille to Complete First Double Since 2018/19
Nantes beat Marseille 3-0 at home to secure a rare double and dent Marseille’s Champions League hopes.
The result was Vahid Halilhodzic’s first win in his second spell as Nantes manager...
Nantes handed Marseille a 3-0 defeat in Vahid Halilhodzic’s first win back in charge, completing a season double over them for the first time since 2018/19.
The away section was empty and some Nantes fans staged a silent protest for the opening 30 minutes, creating a flat atmosphere for a clash between two sides struggling for form.
Nantes controlled the first half, with Deiver Machado causing problems down the left. His injury forced him off, and it took until the 33rd minute for the first shot on target.
That chance fell to Nantes, but Jeffrey de Lange stopped Remy Cabella’s effort after Matthis Abline set him up.
Nantes broke quickly again soon after, and de Lange made another good save to deny Mohamed Kaba, keeping the score level at the break.
Nantes had only scored 10 second-half goals all season, so another dominant spell looked unlikely. Instead, they scored three times in eight minutes before the hour to secure just their third home league win.
Fin du match.

Ignatius Ganago opened the scoring by sweeping in Matthis Abline’s cutback. Abline then turned provider for Remy Cabella, who netted against his former club for the second time this season.
Marseille were still reeling when Abline cut in from the right, drove between Facundo Medina and Leandro Balerdi, and fired home his sixth Ligue 1 goal of the campaign.
Marseille offered little in reply, and with only one win in their last six league games they’re now at risk of dropping out of the top six if Monaco win later in the weekend. A top-four finish and Champions League qualification look very unlikely.
Nantes moved to within two points of the relegation play-off spot after beating Marseille at home for the first time since December 2018.
