EPL: Brentford Crush West Ham 3-0 to Jump to Sixth
| West Ham slip toward relegation after heavy Brentford defeat |
Brentford boost Europe Hopes, damage West Ham’s survival chances. West Ham have won just once in four and risk falling into the bottom three.
The win was Brentford’s first in seven games and moved them up to sixth...
An own goal forced by Michael Kayode started Brentford on the way to a 3-0 win over West Ham, with implications at both ends of the Premier League table. The win ended a seven-match winless run for Brentford and kept their European push alive, while leaving West Ham at risk of slipping into the relegation zone by Sunday.
West Ham almost had a nightmare start when Dango Ouattara’s shot flashed just wide of the post inside the first minute.
Brentford’s opener arrived midway through the first half when Kayode pounced after the ball came back off the woodwork and forced it over the line. VAR ruled that Konstantinos Mavropanos got the final touch, crediting him with the own goal.
Nuno Espírito Santo’s side hit back quickly, and only the post stopped Taty Castellanos from equalizing with a clever curling strike.
West Ham thought they’d leveled when Mavropanos scored at the right end, but VAR ruled him marginally offside and the goal was disallowed.
Brentford missed a chance to double their lead when Mads Hermansen rushed out and left an open goal, but Mikkel Damsgaard couldn’t find the net from distance.
The woodwork denied Castellanos again before the break, and at the other end Hermansen produced a sharp save to keep out Keane Lewis-Potter from close range.
West Ham’s second half started badly after El Hadji Malick Diouf’s rash challenge conceded a penalty, which Igor Thiago converted to make it 2-0. The league’s second-top scorer put Brentford firmly in control, leaving West Ham with a steep hill to climb and sapping their momentum.
Crysencio Summerville nearly changed the mood with a mazy run and shot, but his effort crashed off the crossbar again to the disbelief of the traveling fans.

With 10 minutes left, Mikkel Damsgaard sealed the result by turning sharply in the box and guiding a finish into the bottom corner.
It was only Brentford’s third win in 16 London derbies, and all three have come against West Ham.
The victory lifts Brentford to sixth, aided by Brighton’s defeat at Newcastle.
West Ham’s first loss in four games leaves them in the relegation fight, and Tottenham can push them into the bottom three with a win over Aston Villa on Sunday.
