Bart Verbruggen’s slip allowed Osula to head into an empty net for Newcastle’s opener...

Newcastle United ended a five-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion, hurting the Seagulls’ European push and handing them only their second defeat in nine Premier League matches.

The run of five straight losses had put Eddie Howe under pressure, and a shaky start at St James’ Park did little to ease the tension.

Brighton should have gone ahead early when Jack Hinshelwood met Kaoru Mitoma’s cross, but he shot straight at Nick Pope.

Frustration was building in the stands, and it nearly boiled over when Carlos Baleba smashed an effort against the top of the bar inside 10 minutes. Newcastle’s goal had already had a lucky escape.

Despite being under pressure, it was Newcastle who opened the scoring through William Osula, and there was a bit of farce to it.

Brighton keeper Bart Verbruggen rushed off his line but slipped, letting Jacob Murphy cross for Osula to head into an open net.

Newcastle made it 2-0 with another header shortly after, as Dan Burn powered home Bruno Guimarães’ corner. This time Verbruggen was in position, but he couldn’t keep it out.

Brighton were fortunate not to trail by three at the break when Verbruggen produced a reflex save to deny Malick Thiaw from close range. That stop almost sparked a second-half comeback.

Hinshelwood found space at the near post and headed over, letting another big chance slip for the Seagulls.

He finally scored just after the hour mark. Danny Welbeck laid it off, and Hinshelwood slammed a left-footed strike into the roof of the net.

Brighton’s goal shifted the mood inside St James’ Park, and as they pressed for an equalizer, they couldn’t believe Pascal Groß’s cross didn’t find either Danny Welbeck or Jan Paul van Hecke.

The Seagulls kept pushing late on but couldn’t break through Newcastle’s defense. Eddie Howe’s side held on for only their second win in seven home league games, and Harvey Barnes added a third in injury time, latching onto a loose ball and blasting it into the roof of the net.
