LaLiga: Getafe Edge Copa Kings Sociedad in European Race

Getafe Vs Sociedad
Own goal lifts Getafe to sixth as Sociedad miss penalty

Jon Gorrotxategi’s own goal gave Getafe a 1-0 win over Real Sociedad, lifting them to sixth in LaLiga. Brais Mendez hit the post from the spot for La Real, who suffered a first home defeat of 2026 days after winning the Copa del Rey.

A first-half own goal was enough for Getafe to beat Real Sociedad and strengthen their European push. Sociedad, fresh from Copa del Rey glory, missed a penalty and are already assured of Europa League football next season...

Getafe kept their European chase alive with a tight 1-0 win over Real Sociedad in LaLiga, climbing to sixth and claiming just a third head-to-head victory in their last 12 meetings.

Fresh from lifting the Copa del Rey at the weekend with a final win over Atlético Madrid, Sociedad looked to still be feeling the effects of the celebrations.

Their first-half display showed it, with La Real struggling to impose themselves on the game.

Even so, they had a golden chance to go ahead inside 15 minutes when a penalty was awarded after Abdel Abqar handled Brais Mendéz’s header.

But Mendéz stepped up and struck the post with his spot-kick, handing Getafe a huge let-off.

David Soria denied Orri Óskarsson from a tight angle before Getafe took a fortunate lead just before the half-hour.

Juan Iglesias’ hopeful cross struck Jon Gorrotxategi, whose header looped agonisingly over Álex Remiro and into his own net.

No clear chances followed before the break, leaving La Real needing a big second-half improvement to salvage anything.

Sociedad made three changes by the hour mark, with substitute Ander Barrenetxea firing just over from inside the box.

Barrenetxea was Sociedad’s liveliest threat after coming on, but his energy couldn’t produce clear chances as Getafe comfortably kept them at bay.

Getafe never looked like giving up their lead and are now on track for a first top-10 LaLiga finish since 2019/20.

For Sociedad, it was a first home defeat of 2026, though their recent Copa del Rey triumph will soften the blow.

La Real are already guaranteed UEFA Europa League football next season regardless of their league finish, so they can play out the rest of the campaign without pressure.
