Lazio reached an 11th Coppa Italia final after a dramatic penalty shootout win over Atalanta. The victory marked their first-ever away win against La Dea in the competition at the seventh attempt and set up a final showdown with Inter Milan.
The sides met again seven weeks after a 2-2 first-leg draw at the Stadio Olimpico. Atalanta came in looking to turn around a run of just two wins from their previous 10 games in all competitions.
Despite their poor form, Raffaele Palladino’s side started brightly and did most of the early pressing in Bergamo.
Clear chances were rare, though the best fell to Atalanta when Nicola Zalewski’s shot was deflected wide after Charles De Ketelaere controlled Lorenzo Bernasconi’s pass into the box.
Lazio rarely threatened, with their only real opening coming when Toma Bašić headed well over from Mattia Zaccagni’s free-kick.
With a final spot on the line, it was no surprise the sides managed just one shot on target combined by half-time.
It was a major let-off for the Biancocelesti, who could easily have conceded a penalty in the build-up if Mario Gila had been penalised for handball.
Lazio had their own handball appeal waved away against Giorgio Scalvini before Tijjani Noslin fired a left-footed shot wide, with the Dutchman then seeing another effort blocked by Mario Pasalic.
Atalanta still looked the more likely to break the deadlock and were controversially denied an opener just after the hour.
Ederson tapped in from close range, but VAR ruled that Edoardo Motta already had both hands on the ball when Nikola Krstović found the Brazilian.

The visitors then struck what looked like the tie’s decisive goal when Alessio Romagnoli volleyed a brilliant first-time left-footed finish in from Zaccagni’s corner.

But Pasalic levelled just two minutes later when Krstovic teed up the Croatian to drill a deflected strike past Motta.
The Lazio keeper then pulled off an outstanding save to tip Gianluca Scamacca’s header onto the post, sending this absorbing contest to extra time.
Atalanta thought they had one foot in Rome when Giacomo Raspadori headed the hosts ahead in the 96th minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside against Davide Zappacosta in the build-up.
The additional 30 minutes produced little else in a cagey affair, with a tense penalty shootout looming.
Motta took centre stage in the shootout, delivering a masterclass with four successive penalty saves. He denied Nuno Tavares, Scamacca, Pašalić and De Ketelaere to send Maurizio Sarri’s side into the final.
The Biancocelesti now have their sights on an eighth Coppa Italia title, their first since 2018/19, when they face the Nerazzurri on May 13th.
