Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz departs after the Black Stars' round-of-32 exit at the 2026 World Cup. He praised fans and urged change at the GFA in a farewell message.

The 73-year-old Portuguese coach took Ghana to the round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on a four-month contract. The deal included an extension if they reached the quarter-finals, but that target was not met.

Carlos Queiroz has resigned as Ghana head coach, bringing an 11-week tenure with the Black Stars to an end.

The 73-year-old Portuguese coach confirmed he was leaving just days after Ghana exited the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the round of 32. The Black Stars were beaten 1-0 by Colombia at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on Friday night.

Queiroz made the announcement in a long farewell note to Ghanaians, expressing both pride and what he described as “healthy dissatisfaction.”

Carlos Queiroz has resigned as Ghana head coach, bringing an 11-week tenure with the Black Stars to an end.

“Football, like life, teaches us one timeless lesson: you either win, or you learn. I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more. Reaching a higher level should never be the destination; it should be the beginning of even greater ambitions.”

As he signed off, the Portuguese coach urged the country to look past the pitch, saying the Black Stars’ next chapter would be shaped just as much in the GFA offices as in the dressing room.

“The future of the Black Stars will not be built only on the pitch. Black Stars success must start off the field, by creating the best possible environment to prepare, protect and develop Ghana’s extraordinary football talent.”

Queiroz reserved his warmest tribute for the fans, thousands of whom made the journey to Toronto, Foxboro, Philadelphia and Kansas City to back the Black Stars over the last three weeks.

“To the fans, we cannot claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football’s greatest stage. Thank you, Ghana. The journey starts now. To the future.”

Queiroz was named head coach on April 13th, only two months before the World Cup began. He signed a four-month deal with a two-year extension clause that would kick in if Ghana made the quarter-finals.

That clause was never triggered after Jhon Arias scored in the 14th minute in Kansas City, a goal that sent the Black Stars out in the round of 32.
