Manchester City’s 12th straight league win over Burnley sent them top of the Premier League for the first time since August, with the 1-0 victory also relegating the Clarets to the Championship.
Pessimistic Burnley fans feared a record PL scoreline, and that looked possible after three minutes when Martin Dubravka tipped Rayan Cherki’s shot onto the bar.
City’s pressure told two minutes later when Jeremy Doku slipped Erling Haaland in on goal, and he duly lifted it over Dubravka into the far corner.
City were let off twice by Burnley, with Quilindschy Hartman and Zian Flemming both wasting golden chances to equalise.
With goal difference potentially decisive in a tight title race, City kept pushing forward. Nico O’Reilly, Bernardo Silva and Cherki all had chances to double the lead, but none could beat Dubravka.
In fact, City had Abdukodir Khusanov to thank for keeping their lead at the break, with his last-ditch tackle on Flemming forcing the Dutchman to blast over from close range.
A visibly agitated Pep Guardiola demanded more from the touchline, and his message nearly paid off when Haaland hit the post 10 minutes into the second half.
Beyond that, a flat City struggled to break Burnley down, giving watching Arsenal fans hope the title race wasn’t over yet.

Savinho nearly ended that hope 20 minutes from time, but his fierce strike was saved by Dúbravka’s feet.
City kept pushing until the end, but while the three points were vital, there’ll be some frustration at not improving their goal difference in what looked their easiest remaining game on paper.
The win was still enough to send City top of the PL, a stark contrast to Burnley, whose relegation is now confirmed after a dismal run of one win in their last 25 league games.
