EPL: Brighton Thrash Chelsea to Go Sixth as Blues’ Goal Drought Hits Record Low
| Woeful Chelsea lose fifth straight PL game in Brighton defeat |
Chelsea crisis deepens with 3-0 Brighton defeat. No goals in five PL games for first time since 1993. FA Cup semi vs Leeds up next.
Brighton toy with Chelsea in 3-0 win. Sanchez made several saves but couldn’t stop the Seagulls moving sixth. Chelsea booed off...
Chelsea’s Champions League hopes are effectively over after a 3-0 loss away to Brighton. The defeat leaves the Blues with one win in their last nine games across all competitions and sets a new record for their longest Premier League goal drought.
Chelsea’s poor run includes four straight Premier League losses without scoring a goal. They were at least competitive in most of those games. That was not the case in the first half against a hungry Brighton side.
Brighton needed less than two minutes to test Robert Sanchez. The keeper tipped Kaoru Mitoma’s close-range header over the bar, but the Seagulls scored from the resulting corner.
Jorrel Hato’s mistimed clearance flicked the ball to Ferdi Kadioglu. His shot took a deflection off Wesley Fofana and went in.
With momentum on their side, Brighton toyed with Chelsea and created a host of chances. Jan Paul van Hecke forced another fingertip save from Sanchez, and Georginio Rutter curled just past the post soon after.

Reaction in the race for Europe 👇
Only Jack Hinshelwood knows how he didn’t make it 2-0 midway through the half. A loose Sanchez pass let Yankuba Minteh square to him, but Trevoh Chalobah cleared off the line.
Chelsea improved slightly as half-time approached but still failed to register a shot on target. The travelling fans made their frustration clear.
The visitors finally had their first shot in the 47th minute when Romeo Lavia fired over.
Chelsea’s comeback task soon got harder. Brighton broke from a Chelsea attack and scored through Hinshelwood, who made up for his earlier miss.
Mitoma went close next, volleying past the post from a corner as Brighton looked to rub salt in the Chelsea wounds.
Kadioglu had two chances to grab his second, but Sanchez saved both this time.
It was as comfortable a win as Brighton could have hoped for. The result boosts their own European hopes for next season. Substitute Danny Welbeck added late gloss, guiding home in stoppage time.
Brighton deserve plenty of credit. They’ve now won six of their last eight Premier League games. The focus will again be on Chelsea. They’ve lost five PL matches in a row for the first time since 1993 and haven’t gone this long without a goal in 114 years.
Chelsea at least have Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United at Wembley as a distraction. But after being targeted with expletive-ridden chants in the second half, it remains to be seen if Rosenior will still be in charge.
