EPL: Man United Beat Chelsea, Go 10 Points Clear of Blues

Cunha strikes as United complete pl double

Chelsea’s top-four hopes took a hit as Matheus Cunha fired Manchester United to a 1-0 victory, with the Blues now 10 points behind United in the table.

Cunha hits winner for Manchester United as Chelsea slump to fourth straight Premier League home loss...

Chelsea have now lost four straight Premier League home games for the first time since 1998 after a 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at Stamford Bridge, a result that tightened United’s grip on a top-three spot

Both sides came into the match off the back of PL defeats far from ideal preparation for a pivotal clash in their respective pushes for UEFA Champions League qualification.

Chelsea, however, were in greater need of points given they had won just one of their last seven at home, and they looked the more threatening side through a largely cagey opening half.

Estevao came inches from opening the scoring when his curling effort from outside the box struck the post, and that proved to be his only real involvement before he was forced off injured shortly after.

Enzo Fernandez then fired narrowly wide from inside the area as Chelsea seemed to be shifting up a gear, only for the visitors to strike with their only shot on target of the half when Matheus Cunha finished from Bruno Fernandes’ cutback.

After the restart, the responsibility fell on Chelsea to take the game to their opponents and keep their top-four hopes alive.

And they did just that, twice striking the bar from deliveries into the box.

First, Delap’s header rattled the woodwork, before Noussair Mazraoui inadvertently did the same - though it would have been ruled out as the ball had already hit Wesley Fofana’s hand.

Cole Palmer then also dragged a shot wide, but the Chelsea onslaught that seemed inevitable never materialized.

Moises Caicedo came agonizingly close to finding the bottom corner late on, yet the Red Devils looked largely comfortable as they protected their slender lead.

The result only piles more pressure on Liam Rosenior, who may now have to shift focus to qualifying for a different European competition rather than the UCL, with several sides behind them lining up to challenge.

Manchester United, meanwhile, have now moved 10 points clear of Chelsea in the table thanks to just their second-ever PL H2H double over the Blues, as interim boss Michael Carrick earns further praise for his work since replacing Ruben Amorim earlier this season.
