‘Embarrassing’ and ‘spineless’ - the verdict from Chelsea fans after Brighton humbling. No creativity without Palmer, just three tackles won, and 14 shots conceded. Growing frustration in the stands as Champions League hopes slip away.

Just a point separated the sides before kickoff, with the Blues holding the Europa League spot and the Seagulls among several teams just outside the top seven.

Early Blow for the Blues

Fabian Hurzeler’s side came in on a four-game unbeaten run, while Liam Rosenior had watched his team lose four straight in the Premier League without scoring a goal.

After beating the Blues 3-1 at Stamford Bridge earlier this season, Brighton had a chance to complete the double over the West Londoners. They got off to the perfect start when Ferdi Kadioglu opened the scoring in the third minute.

It was his first goal since November 2, 2024, against Liverpool, and Brighton’s quickest this season. It was their seventh goal in the opening 15 minutes of a game - only West Ham (9) and Man City (8) have more in that span this season.

Three more shots on goal and 72% possession in the opening 15 minutes showed how much the hosts controlled the early stages.

Palmer’s Absence Leaves Void

Missing Cole Palmer from the starting XI through injury was a blow Chelsea didn’t need. No visiting player offered any spark of creativity.

Pinned back for long spells, only Jorrel Hato came away with any credit as the sole defender making tackles.

None of his defensive teammates made a single tackle the entire match, an alarming stat for a team hoping to qualify for the Champions League.

Brighton’s attacking pressure kept up through the first 45, adding five more attempts by halftime.

Gross Runs the Show as Chelsea Falter

Pascal Gross ran rings around Chelsea and created three chances before 20 minutes were played.

Liam Rosenior already looked like a deer in the headlights on the sideline, and that showed in the performance on the pitch. The Blues looked lost.

Trevoh Chalobah at least won all his one-on-ones on the ground and in the air, and had Chelsea’s first attempt of any kind in the 41st minute.

With over 40% of play in the visitors’ defensive third as halftime neared, Rosenior needed his side to pass out of pressure. But that part of their game was well below par on the night.

Second-Half Struggles Deepen

The normally ultra-reliable Enzo Fernandez completed just 83% of his passes, and a player who loves to get forward had no shots or touches in the Brighton box. That gave Rosenior more questions to answer.

A rousing halftime team talk was clearly needed to get the visitors back in the game. But 10 minutes after the break, Chelsea were further behind.

Jack Hinshelwood made it a long way back for the visitors, who had at least seen 66% of the ball in the early stages of the second half.

That possession edge was brief, though, and the game soon settled back into a familiar pattern.

Welbeck Puts Game Beyond Reach

Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo did their best to break up play, managing it 10 times between them with mixed success. But teammates let them down by allowing Brighton to play around them too easily.

Before Danny Welbeck added a third in injury time to cap Chelsea’s misery, the hosts had 14 shots on goal, with nine on target.

Compare that to the West Londoners, who didn’t record a single shot on target and only six total on the night. Three came from substitutes, one from a defender, and two from midfield.

Excluding Alejandro Garnacho’s six touches in the Brighton box after coming on, the rest of the team managed just nine touches in the area combined.

Defensive Frailties Exposed Again

Chelsea’s issues weren’t limited to a lack of attacking threat. They won just three tackles all night, with two coming from Hato.

Substitute Dario Essugo was the only other player to win a tackle, a damning snapshot of where the Blues are right now.

It was the first time Chelsea failed to register a shot on target in a game since they played Brighton in February 2025.

They’ve also failed to score in their last five Premier League games, a 542-minute run without a goal. It’s the longest they’ve gone without scoring in a league game since 1912.

This run is Chelsea’s worst since going six games without a win between October and November 1993.

No goals, no fight… no hope?
