Leverkusen win at Signal Iduna Park, move to fifth in Bundesliga...

Robert Andrich's goal was enough to secure a 1-0 win for Bayer Leverkusen over Borussia Dortmund, boosting their UEFA Champions League qualification hopes. This victory marks Leverkusen's fifth position, while handing Dortmund their second home loss in 15 Bundesliga games this season.

Dortmund had been on a four-game winning streak, putting them in a comfortable position, but now their title charge seems uncertain. Leverkusen's win keeps them in contention for a top-four finish, with five matches left to play.

The pressure was on Dortmund, who still had eyes on a top-four finish despite their underwhelming title defence.

The game started slowly with no shots on target from either side, but BVB had a golden opportunity early on - Loic Bade headed Daniel Svensson's strike off the line, denying an early lead.

Three of Die Werkself’s last four Bundesliga encounters had seen over 5.5 goals, yet that trend appeared unlikely to continue as the sides were restricted to attempts from range.

Nonetheless, one of those speculative strikes proved to be the opener, with Andrich seizing possession and driving a low shot inside the far post to put the visitors ahead before half-time.

A brief surge of pressure from Dortmund after halftime fizzled out, leading to a midfield stalemate. Both coaches responded by making substitutions, hoping to inject some life into the game. Leverkusen's Patrik Schick had a chance, firing a shot from a tight angle straight at Gregor Kobel.

Leverkusen dominated possession as the game headed towards full-time, with Dortmund's home crowd strangely quiet.

In the dying moments, Serhou Guirassy had a great chance to equalise, but his shot from inside the box hit the underside of the crossbar. Moments later, Julian Brandt's low effort went narrowly wide, sealing Leverkusen's win.

Although disappointing, a first loss to a side starting the day outside the top five this season (W17, D4) does little to affect Dortmund’s position, with an eight-point buffer almost certainly enough to see them through to the end of the campaign in second.

However, the result is far from inconsequential for Leverkusen, who move up to fifth and are now just one point off the top four thanks to their first pair of back-to-back league wins since January.
