Indian Wells: Jack Draper Ends Novak Djokovic's Title Defence
Novak Djokovic's Indian Wells title defence ends with 5-2 loss to Jack Draper. Jack Draper defeats Novak Djokovic 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) in Indian Wells thriller.
Draper stuns Djokovic with determination and clever play to reach quarterfinals.
Jack Draper pulled off a stunning upset, defeating Novak Djokovic 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (5) to advance to the Indian Wells quarterfinals. This thrilling win marks a major milestone in Draper's comeback, having missed six months due to an arm injury.
Djokovic, a five-time Indian Wells champion, seemed poised to take the match after winning the first set, but Draper rallied impressively to take the next two sets. The Brit showcased incredible determination and resilience, forcing a tiebreaker and ultimately sealing the win.
Meanwhile, world number one Carlos Alcaraz cruised into the last eight for the fifth consecutive year, while Daniil Medvedev and Cameron Norrie secured straight-set victories.
Jack Draper's epic win over Novak Djokovic was a testament to his determination and problem-solving skills. The British player wore down the 38-year-old Serbian superstar in a grueling third set, denying him a spot in the quarter-finals for the first time since 2016. “I came out here tonight and I won that match through determination and trying to problem-solve and do my best and have a great attitude,” Draper said after the match.
Draper's victory was all the more impressive given Djokovic's experience and past success at Indian Wells, where he has won five titles. The Briton's clever use of drop shots kept Djokovic on his toes, ultimately contributing to his downfall. Djokovic himself praised Draper's performance, acknowledging that he had played a “sloppy game” to close out the match.
The match was neck and neck for two sets, but a pivotal moment in the third set's opening game proved to be a turning point. Both players went all out, chasing drop shots and scrambling for lobs, until Djokovic took a 40-30 lead with an overhead smash. However, the physical toll was evident – he dropped to his knees exhausted, and though he held serve, it seemed to shift the momentum.
Draper capitalised on the shift, and Djokovic later admitted that moment was the difference in the match. “It was a really tough match, physically and mentally,“ Djokovic said.
“One point,” he said. “It was great winning that point in that game, but I just ran completely out of gas.”
Draper seized the momentum, breaking Djokovic's serve in the next game to take a 5-4 lead. However, he couldn't capitalize on his advantage when serving for the match, allowing Djokovic to force a tiebreaker. Despite Djokovic's early lead of 4-3 in the tiebreaker, Draper rallied to win it 7-5, securing a stunning 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5) victory.
Draper's win marked a major milestone in his comeback, having missed six months due to an arm injury. Djokovic praised Draper's determination, saying, “I lost to a great player, and it was really such an even match throughout the entire two-and-a-half hours.”
“He played a sloppy game to close it out 5-4, and, you know, I got the crowd, you know, backing me, and I felt the energy,” Djokovic said. “It was, like, maybe I'm gonna take this one. It was so, so close.”
Draper was over the moon after the win, playing just his second tournament since returning from a six-month arm injury. “It's just amazing, honestly,” he said, beaming with pride.
