The Qatar 'Finalissima' match between Spain and Argentina has been cancelled due to the Middle East conflict. UEFA blames the cancellation on the South American federation rejecting alternative venues.

The ongoing tensions have disrupted travel and forced several sporting events to be cancelled. Looks like sports took a hit due to safety concerns.

The highly-anticipated match between Spain and Argentina, scheduled for March 27th at Doha's Lusail Stadium, has been cancelled. The game would've featured a thrilling clash between Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal.

UEFA cited the “current political situation” in the region as the reason for cancellation, stating they couldn't find a viable alternative with Argentina's federation rejecting proposals.

“It is a source of great disappointment to UEFA and the organisers that circumstances and ‌timing have denied the teams the chance to compete for this prestigious prize in Qatar,” UEFA ‌said in a statement.

The Football Association of Serbia has announced they'll play a friendly against Spain on March 27th instead.

Seria will host Saudi Arabia four days later, on March 31st, as part of their international friendlies.

Argentina reject alternatives, Spain keen to play

The Finalissima's cancellation was not just about Qatar's security concerns, however, with UEFA saying they explored other feasible alternatives, but they proved to be 'unacceptable' to the Argentinian Football Association (AFA).

UEFA's first proposal was to host the match at Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu with a 50:50 fan split.

A second option involved a two-legged tie: one at the Bernabeu on March 27th and the return leg in Buenos Aires during a future international window.

The AFA rejected both proposals from UEFA. Argentina countered with a post-World Cup date, but Spain had no available slots.

“Ultimately, UEFA sought a commitment from Argentina that, if a neutral venue in Europe could be found, the game could go ahead on 27 March... or on the alternative date of 30 March. This proposal was also rejected,” UEFA added.

Spain's RFEF claims they offered Argentina “all possible options” with UEFA to save the match. They've got the capacity to host on short notice, but Argentina wasn't having it.

“From the very outset, the Federation has expressed its absolute commitment to ensuring this ‌match goes ahead, as it believes it brings prestige and international reputation at a crucial time in a World Cup year,” the RFEF said.

“Furthermore, it has worked tirelessly to achieve this. Spain was prepared to play, as has always been stated.”

The 2026 World Cup in the US, Mexico, and Canada kicks off on June 11th.

The last Finalissima was held at London's Wembley Stadium, where Argentina thumped Italy 3-0.

CONMEBOL and AFA rejected a single match in Madrid, citing fairness concerns. UEFA then proposed Italy as an alternative venue for March 27thm

“Argentina accepted the idea without objection, except for the date, suggesting March 31,” CONMEBOL and the AFA said in a joint statement.

“Unfortunately, UEFA announced that holding the match on the 31st - just four days later than the original proposal - was not possible, and the Finalissima was cancelled.”

UEFA's final round of World Cup qualifiers is happening on March 31st, with four teams set to secure their spot in the tournament. Some of the matches include Romania vs Turkiye, Albania vs Poland, North Macedonia vs Denmark, and Northern Ireland vs Italy.
