Spain vs Argentina 'Finalissima' match in Doha uncertain as Qatar Football Association suspends tournaments following US, Israel attacks on Iran.
Football tournaments in Qatar and Asia disrupted by conflict in the Middle East, Spain-Argentina 'Finalissima' match in doubt....
The 'Finalissima' match between Spain and Argentina, scheduled for March 27 at Doha's Lusail Stadium, is in doubt due to the escalating conflict in the Middle East. The Qatar Football Association has suspended all tournaments indefinitely following US and Israeli attacks on Iran and retaliatory missile strikes on the Arabian Peninsula. This puts the highly anticipated match between European champions Spain and Copa America winners Argentina at risk, with star players like Lamine Yamal and Lionel Messi set to clash.
“Qatar Football Association announces the postponement of all tournaments, competitions and matches, effective from today and until further notice,” the association said in a statement on Sunday.
“The new dates for the resumption of competitions will be announced in due course through the Association's official channels.”
The decision to postpone the 'Finalissima' match now lies with UEFA and CONMEBOL, the event organisers. Other football bodies in the region are already taking precautions: Bahrain's Football Association has postponed all matches, and the Asian Football Confederation has delayed Champions League Elite fixtures in the area.
The Asian Champions League Two and Challenge League games have also been hit, with fixtures delayed due to the escalating tensions. The region's been on high alert since Saturday, with the US and Israel launching air strikes against Iran.
The situation's fluid, and football's taking a backseat for now.
Iran has retaliated against US targets in the region, striking locations in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. In Qatar, a fire broke out in an industrial zone after debris from an intercepted missile fell, according to the country's interior ministry. The incident didn't result in any casualties or injuries.
The attacks have led to heightened tensions, with Gulf countries condemning Iran's actions and affirming their right to self-defense. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar have all been targeted, with reports of damage to airports, hotels, and residential areas.
