LaLiga: Real Sociedad's European Hopes Hit by Goalless Draw Against Athletic Bilbao
Real Sociedad's European qualification hopes take a hit after a 0-0 draw against Athletic Bilbao in the Basque derby, extending Sociedad's winless streak to four games.
Real Sociedad's European hopes suffered a setback after a 0-0 draw against Athletic Bilbao in the intense Basque derby at Reale Arena, extending Sociedad's winless LaLiga streak to four games.
The match was marked by a lackluster first half, with both teams failing to show intensity and managing only one shot on target between them. Athletic Bilbao, coming off a disappointing UEL semi-final loss, struggled to create scoring opportunities.
Sociedad's efforts in the first half included Martín Zubimendi's header, which didn't trouble Unai Simón, and Mikel Oyarzabal and Sergio Gómez volleying over from promising positions. Bilbao's sole notable attempt came from Gorka Guruzeta, whose goal-bound strike was well-blocked. Like many away matches this season, the half ended goalless, with neither team able to find a breakthrough.

The second half saw both goalkeepers make early saves, with Unai Simón pushing away Takefusa Kubo's effort and Álex Remiro gathering Álex Berenguer's long-range strike. Simón was called into action again around the hour mark, saving Brais Méndez's header from a corner. Méndez was later substituted by Luka Sučić, who had a chance to win the game in the final stages but shot tamely, allowing Simón to make the save.
Despite dominating much of the match, Real Sociedad had to settle for a point, keeping them outside the European spots. However, they extended their unbeaten home record against Athletic Bilbao to eight matches.
The draw meant Athletic Bilbao have now won only once in their last seven away league games. Nonetheless, they remain in a strong position to finish in the top four and qualify for the UEFA Champions League, although they face a potential exit from the UEFA Europa League against Manchester United.
