“City That Never Sleeps” – Wawrinka Says Goodbye After US Open Wildcard Snub

Former US Open winner Stan Wawrinka said an emotional goodbye to Flushing Meadows after failing to get a wildcard. The Swiss star won’t get a final send-off at the last Slam of the year in what he says will be his last season.
The 40-year-old Swiss received wildcards for the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon in 2025. But he won’t feature at the US Open, the site of his 2016 triumph, missing the chance for one last appearance at a major.
The 41-year-old, a three-time Grand Slam winner, was left out when the last wildcards were named over the weekend. He also won’t play in this week’s qualifying event.
“This city tested me. It pushed me. It brought out a side of me that few other places ever have,” Wawrinka posted on Instagram.
“I experienced some of the strongest emotions of my career here. Winning the US Open in the city that never sleeps will forever be one of the greatest moments of my life.”
Frenchman Gael Monfils, who has also announced he’ll retire at the end of 2025, was given a reciprocal wildcard. Those are handed out by national federations. The former world No.6 is currently ranked 307, while Wawrinka sits at 127.

On the women’s side, 2-time US Open champion Venus Williams was handed a wildcard for this year’s event.
The US Open men’s and women’s singles main draws get underway on Sunday.
