LaLiga: Inaki Williams Scores as Athletic Club Beat Las Palmas 1-0

Athletic Club's 1-0 victory over Las Palmas boosts their Champions League hopes, extending their unbeaten home streak at San Mamés.

Athletic Club bounced back to winning ways with a 1-0 victory over Las Palmas, boosting their Champions League hopes. Inaki Williams scored the decisive goal in the sixth minute, using his skill to slip behind the Las Palmas defense and slot the ball home.

Athletic seemed to be playing it safe, with coach Ernesto Valverde prioritizing their upcoming Europa League semi-final. This was evident in the early substitution of playmaker Oihan Sancet. Despite Las Palmas having possession, they lacked a cutting edge and struggled to create clear chances.

The match dynamics shifted in the second half as Athletic increased the tempo. They nearly doubled their lead when Alex Berenguer's header hit the crossbar, showcasing their growing dominance on the pitch.

Athletic Club maintained control of the match heading into the final 30 minutes, and the introduction of Nico Williams posed an additional threat to Las Palmas. However, the visitors' fortunes changed when Adnan Januzaj struck a stunning half-volley that hit the bar, giving Las Palmas a glimmer of hope.

Januzaj's chance sparked a late rally for Las Palmas, with Jamie Mata and Marc Cardona having subsequent attempts deflected away. Despite the visitors' push, Athletic Club held firm to secure the win.

Athletic Club successfully saw out the remainder of the match, securing a hard-fought 1-0 win. The victory extends their remarkable home form at San Mamés, where they have lost only once since August 2023.

The win also widens the gap between Athletic Club and sixth-place Real Betis to nine points. For Las Palmas, the defeat leaves them precariously positioned, just a point above the relegation zone, as they prepare for their upcoming home match against Valencia.
