Serie A: Genoa Secure Back-to-Back Home Wins with 2-0 Victory Over Monza

Genoa have moved six points clear of the relegation zone with a dominant 2-0 win over bottom club Monza, courtesy of second-half strikes from Koni De Winter and Johan Vasquez.

Genoa secured a dominant 2-0 victory over bottom club Monza, with second-half goals from Koni De Winter and Johan Vasquez propelling them six points clear of the relegation zone. This win marked the first time since May that Genoa have won back-to-back home league games, a testament to their growing momentum.

The match began with a lackluster opening quarter of an hour, with few chances created by either side. However, Monza's Georgios Kyriakopoulos sparked the game to life with a low, deflected strike that narrowly missed the far post. Genoa, who had struggled to find the net in the first half of their previous seven outings, were frustrated in their attempts to score, with several shots blocked and the goalkeeper remaining untested.

As the first half progressed, Genoa began to exert their dominance, with Andrea Pinamonti twice denied by Monza goalkeeper Stefano Turati. Pinamonti's towering header was pushed over the bar, and Turati made a stunning stop to his right to save a penalty, awarded after Kyriakopoulos was penalized for manhandling Vasquez in the area. Fabio Miretti's effort was then deflected inches over the bar, ensuring the score remained level at halftime.

The second half saw Genoa continue their onslaught, with Miretti rattling the woodwork with a header, while Morten Thorsby was denied by Turati after making a lung-busting run from the centre circle. The pressure eventually paid off, as De Winter and Vasquez scored in the second half to seal a comfortable victory for Genoa.

The breakthrough finally came in the 61st minute when Koni De Winter broke the deadlock with a well-timed header. De Winter, who was left unmarked, dove in at the back post to squeeze home a header from Aaron Martin's deep free-kick. This goal marked the beginning of the end for Monza, who were headed for their eighth defeat in their last nine outings.

Monza's struggles continued as they remained unable to mount a meaningful response to Genoa's goal. In contrast, Genoa pushed for more, seeking to extend their lead. Despite wasting further chances through Fabio Miretti and Caleb Ekuban, Genoa eventually sealed the win when Johan Vasquez made a well-timed run onto Maxwel Cornet's cross and powered a header home.

The 2-0 scoreline marked a convincing victory for Genoa, who have now kept six clean sheets across their last nine outings. In contrast, Monza's struggles continue, with the team having lost five successive away games for the first time since 2011, when they were competing in Serie C. Genoa's dominance was nearly capped off with a third goal in injury time, but De Winter's header was saved, leaving the final score at 2-0.
