Iraola downplays Frimpong injury fears after loss to Leeds

Iraola: Liverpool end us tour with Leeds defeat as Iraola plays down Frimpong issue. Frimpong sub was “just overload” as Liverpool injury woes continue.

“Jeremie asked for the sub but I don't think it's an injury...”

Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola played down concerns over Jeremie Frimpong after the defender was forced off during Sunday’s 4-2 pre-season loss to Leeds United in Chicago. The 25-year-old asked to come off midway through the second half.

Liverpool can’t afford another setback, with Frimpong already a key piece and several other injuries hitting the squad ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Joe Gomez is set to miss the start of the season after picking up a muscle injury in the win over Sunderland. Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike and Giovanni Leoni are also still out as they work their way back from injury.

“Jeremie asked for the sub but I don't think it's an injury,” Iraola told Liverpool media after the game.
“It was just some overload and I hope he's not injured in that way. I don't think we've lost anyone.”

Iraola, who took over from Arne Slot in June, said the US tour finale offered important takeaways for the squad.

“Obviously it's not the result you want but I think it was probably the most useful friendly we played in a positive way in the first ‌half and in a negative way in the second half,” he added.

“We've learned ‌a lot from today and I think we can take good conclusions and solve some things.”

Liverpool, who finished fifth last season, kick off their Premier League campaign away at Newcastle United on August 23rd.
