With all due respect to Hull City, few would have expected them to take points off Manchester United in their Premier League opener on Saturday.

Defeat Might Be United’s Wake-Up Call
It’s obvious United are still a work in progress under their former captain, but the way the players responded to him after he took over from Ruben Amorim suggested success wasn’t far away.
Maybe this loss is exactly the jolt the club needed to stop anyone getting ahead of themselves.
With the transfer window still open, United have to make sure they’re looking at all the options. The left-back position looks like one area where they still want to add.
Luke Shaw put in a decent performance, but it won’t have been lost on anyone, Carrick included, that at 31 and with his injury record, the England full-back needs to be handled with care.
Mendes Pushing Balde Toward Old Trafford
To do that, United need someone who can genuinely push Shaw for a starting spot every week. It appears they’ve earmarked Barcelona’s 22-year-old Alejandro Balde as a candidate.
Spanish reports claim Balde’s agent, Jorge Mendes, is offering the defender to clubs across Europe. The plan, it seems, is to tempt Manchester United into making a move.
The speculation only ramped up after Barcelona thrashed Elche 5-0 on Sunday, a game Balde didn’t feature in. You’d assume Barca left him out to avoid any injury that could jeopardize a potential sale.

So if United did land Balde, what exactly would they be getting for their investment?
First off, Balde is rapid. He bombs up and down the left flank at a speed that most opponents simply can’t keep up with.
Looking at last season for context, he completed 90.24% of his passes in the final third during Champions League matches. His overall accuracy peaked at 93.87% in the 2025/26 Copa del Rey.
What stands out more about Balde’s attacking play, and something United would need to work on if he’s to succeed at the Theatre of Dreams, is his delivery in the final third.
His speed gets him to the byline easily enough, but the numbers don’t lie. Just 8 successful crosses last season compared to 28 that didn’t find a teammate is a major weakness in his game.
Dig a bit deeper and 79 take-ons with 41 completed doesn’t look bad at first glance. But the problem is none of them led to Balde creating a chance.
Even wilder is that from 304 ball carries, he only managed one assist. It’s almost hard to believe the return could be that low.

United Risking A Panic Buy At Left-Back
Just 3 shots on target from 12 attempts also suggests Balde isn’t exactly confident when it comes to shooting.
On the defensive side, he won at least 30 of 48 tackles, giving him a 65.71% success rate in LaLiga.
He also made 37 clearances last season, which is fine. But in the bigger picture, that level likely isn’t enough for a United side trying to get back among Europe’s elite.
There's no word yet on what Barca would demand for Balde, but with a market value of about €50m and a contract until June 2028, he won’t be a bargain.
United have left it so late in the window to fill the last spots in the squad that their options are limited. That could push the board into another signing they end up regretting later.
