Orsolini’s goal secured victory for Bologna, but Atalanta’s head-to-head advantage over them ensured Conference League qualification...

Bologna took the win on the day through a goal from Riccardo Orsolini, but Atalanta still secured a spot in the Conference League. They did so thanks to a better head-to-head record against Bologna.

The match was a direct contest for seventh place and Conference League qualification. Even so, Atalanta’s six-point lead meant the outcome was already all but decided in La Dea’s favor. Isak Hien missed the game through suspension, while Odilon Kossounou and Lorenzo Bernasconi were out injured. Bologna came into the game off a 3-2 win away at Napoli, but were without Jhon Lucumí due to suspension. Martin Vitik, Nicolò Cambiaghi, and Nicolo Casale were also not fully fit.

Berat Djimsiti failed to connect with a Charles De Ketelaere cross at the back post. Moments later, Lukasz Skorupski rushed out of his area and headed the ball clear before it reached Davide Zappacosta.

Federico Bernardeschi hit a low shot from outside the box that drifted just wide. Jonathan Rowe also had a chance, but his strike went straight at Marco Carnesecchi.

Nicola Zalewski curled a right-footed shot just over the crossbar. At the other end, Carnesecchi reacted quickly to tip Jonathan Rowe’s angled drive around the far post with an excellent fingertip save.

In first-half stoppage time, the Atalanta goalkeeper was quick off the ground again to palm away Santiago Castro’s turn and shot from 12 yards out.

Carnesecchi nearly paid for a weak back-pass from Ederson when Rowe closed in, but the goalkeeper managed to clear the danger. At the other end, Kamaldeen Sulemana headed a Zappacosta cross just wide.

Bologna grabbed the lead late on when Rowe lifted a ball to the back post. Riccardo Orsolini met it with a volley from a tight angle, beating the offside trap after Bologna took the free kick short.

Mitchel Bakker returned from a long injury lay-off and nearly equalised within 60 seconds. He got his head to a cross, but only grazed it.

Nikola Krstovic beat the offside trap onto a through ball in stoppage time, yet Skorupski denied him in a one-on-one.

A 2-0 win for Bologna would have kept the race for seventh alive until the final round. As it stands, Atalanta cannot be overtaken by Bologna because of their superior head-to-head record.
