Serie A: Atalanta Extend Unbeaten Run vs Milan with Gritty 3-2 Win

Atalanta stun Milan at San Siro to blow top-four race wide open

Atalanta made it six games unbeaten against AC Milan, winning 3-2 at San Siro despite a late Milan rally. The result leaves Milan level on points with Roma with two matches left.

Atalanta beat AC Milan 3-2 at the San Siro on May 10, dealing a major blow to Milan’s Champions League hopes as Ederson, Zappacosta, and Raspadori scored for La Dea...

Atalanta came away from San Siro with a 3-2 win over a struggling AC Milan side sitting fourth in Serie A. The result stretched La Dea’s unbeaten run against Milan in the league to six matches, with four wins and two draws.

Atalanta, winless in four Serie A outings with two draws and two defeats, arrived at the San Siro under pressure to turn things around for Raffaele Palladino’s side.

The visitors were let off early when Adrien Rabiot’s effort from just outside the box hit the post. They capitalized on the escape in the 7th minute, as Ederson reacted fastest to a loose ball in the area and slotted home clinically for his second league goal of the campaign.

After taking the lead, Atalanta pushed to extend it and found a second just before the half-hour mark.

Nikola Krstovic displayed sharp awareness to lay the ball off to Davide Zappacosta inside the box, and the wing-back kept his composure to slot a calm finish past Mike Maignan.

Facing a two-goal deficit, Milan pushed to get back into the game, but Rafael Leao was denied by Marco Carnesecchi, who stood firm to keep the Portuguese winger out.

Atalanta have now lost just twice in their last 11 Serie A trips to Milan, and they strengthened their grip on the match in the 51st minute. Giacomo Raspadori finished off Ederson’s pass with a precise angled strike into the top corner to make it 3-0.

Determined to avoid a heavy defeat, Milan raised the tempo in the final 30 minutes, but Marco Carnesecchi stood tall for Atalanta, denying Christopher Nkunku what would have been his first Serie A goal since February.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side kept pressing for a way back in. Adrien Rabiot drilled a low effort wide, and Niclas Fullkrug thought he’d scored, only for his well-taken finish to be ruled out for offside.

Milan’s pressure finally paid off in the 88th minute when Samuele Ricci’s free-kick found Strahinja Pavlovic, who headed into the far corner to make it 3-1.

Buoyed by that goal, the hosts struck again in stoppage time. Nkunku converted from the spot after Marten de Roon’s clumsy foul, cutting the deficit to one.

Despite Milan’s late surge and a final chance for Matteo Gabbia, Atalanta held firm under pressure to take all three points. It marked just their third away league win in nine outings.
