The San Diego Padres pulled off a deadline-day deal for Detroit Tigers right-hander Casey Mize and utility player Gage Workman, completing the trade just before Monday’s cutoff.

Mize, 29, is having his best season yet. He owns a 2.70 ERA - a career low - and opposing hitters are batting only .213 against him after hitting .263 last year. The 2018 No. 1 overall draft pick has allowed 67 hits and 19 walks while striking out 85 over 86.2 innings this season.

Earlier Monday, San Diego also picked up veteran starter Robbie Ray. [details here].

Going back to Detroit in the Mize deal are Padres No. 2 prospect Kash Mayfield, a left-hander at High-A, and 27-year-old minor league pitcher Jackson Wolf.

Despite being a top draft pick, Mize got off to a rocky start. He debuted in 2020 and posted a 6.99 ERA across seven starts. He rebounded in 2021 with a 3.71 ERA in 30 starts and threw a career-high 150.1 innings.

Injuries derailed him in 2022. Mize underwent both Tommy John surgery and back surgery, and he ended up missing all of 2024 as well.

He returned in 2024 and was solid with a 4.49 ERA, then broke out in 2025. That year he set career bests with 139 strikeouts in 149 innings over 28 starts. Now he’s headed to the Padres after being one of the biggest names on the market at the deadline.

Workman, 26, has struggled in the majors this year, hitting .158/.158/.395 in 16 games. In Triple-A he’s been a different story: .305/.366/.502 with 11 homers, 51 RBI, and 20 stolen bases.
