Marta Kostyuk powered past Mirra Andreeva 6-3, 7-5 in 1 hour 20 minutes on Saturday to claim the Madrid Open title, the third WTA singles trophy of her career.

The Ukrainian entered Madrid looking for a statement result after wins in Austin in 2023 and Rouen last month, and she delivered with a focused, aggressive performance to take the title.

Kostyuk started with relentless intensity, stepping inside the baseline and hitting as if every shot mattered. She brought raw power and determination, while Andreeva responded with a cleaner, more patient game, varying her shots to unsettle the Ukrainian at times.

Kostyuk took charge in the sixth game of the opening set, forcing a string of unforced errors from the Russian to break for 4-2. She backed it up with a strong hold to extend the lead to 5-2.

Serving for the set, Kostyuk wavered. She saved two break points to reach deuce but double-faulted on set point to let Andreeva back in. She regrouped quickly though, and closed out the set 6-3 in 34 minutes to move one set from her first WTA 1000 title.

“It feels unbelievable to be standing here right now,” Kostyuk said. “I can only thank my team for supporting me throughout the years. If you look at the stats, I was way down the line and never thought I would be standing here where I am right now, playing the way I'm playing.”

Andreeva celebrated her 19th birthday this week and sits eighth in the WTA rankings, long viewed as one of the most talented players of her generation. In Madrid though, she once again looked uncomfortable when entering as the favorite.

The second set was volatile. Andreeva gifted Kostyuk an early break with back-to-back unforced errors, but broke right back after Kostyuk double-faulted and created two break points to level at 1-1. She pushed ahead to 3-1 when Kostyuk missed a routine smash, and the Ukrainian looked stunned as the momentum shifted.

That swing didn’t hold. Kostyuk broke back for 3-3 by converting on triple break point, and from there the match became a battle of composure.

Serving to stay in the match at 4-5 down, Andreeva produced three excellent rallies to bring it to deuce and had a set point, only to give it away with an unforced error. She earned another with a dazzling winner, but Kostyuk answered with back-to-back aces to hold for 5-5.

Andreeva’s up-and-down afternoon ended with a double fault that handed Kostyuk the break for 6-5. There was no slip this time. Kostyuk served it out decisively to clinch the title, a win that showcased both her power and mental toughness.
