Fast start powers Marseille Past Rennes on final day...
Marseille sealed fifth place and a Europa League spot with a convincing 3-1 win over Rennes on the final day of Ligue 1. The result pushed Rennes down to the Conference League spot on goal difference.
Rennes began the day in fifth, three points clear of Marseille and still with a slim chance of making the top four.
Those Champions League hopes were gone within 10 minutes at the Stade Vélodrome.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg opened the scoring after just two minutes, his fourth Ligue 1 goal of the season, with a low finish past Mathys Silistrie.
It got worse for Rennes soon after when Amine Gouiri pressed Silistrie’s clearance and forced the ball into the net.
After a shaky start, Rennes finally threatened midway through the first half when Ludovic Blas forced Gerónimo Rulli into a save at the near post.
Rulli was called into action again soon after, making a tougher stop to tip Musa Al-Taamari’s curling shot onto the crossbar.
Seeing Rennes’ response, Habib Beye would have been pleased to watch his former side extend their lead early in the second half. Beye was sacked by Rennes in February.

A sloppy giveaway from Rennes led to the goal, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang finishing it off with a perfect chip to the far post.
Late on, Esteban Lepaul showed why he leads Ligue 1 in scoring, rising to head home Arnaud Nordin’s clipped cross. That came just minutes after Mahdi Camara had hit the woodwork.
Lepaul’s 21st league goal gave Franck Haise’s side a late lift, but it wasn’t enough. Rennes fell to defeat and dropped into the Conference League spot, unless Lens beat Nice in the Coupe de France final to turn sixth place into a Europa League place.
