‎Lyon Down Rennes 4-2 to take control of Champions League spot...

Lyon snapped Rennes’ four-match winning run with a 4-2 win, moving themselves up to third in Ligue 1.

With a Champions League place on the line, the Groupama Stadium had a tense, charged atmosphere. Lyon controlled possession early, but were stunned in the sixth minute.

Musa Al-Taamari produced a moment of quality out of nothing. After Esteban Lepaul’s long diagonal found him on the run, the Jordanian struck a first-time volley from the edge of the box that curled into the far corner.

Lyon pushed to respond but grew frustrated as crosses and set pieces failed to find a target. Their persistence paid off with a quick turnaround before halftime.

Corentin Tolisso delivered the equalizer with an inswinging cross that had the pace and shape for Roman Yaremchuk to glance it past Brice Samba.

Minutes later Lyon led. Al-Taamari barged Afonso Moreira in the box, and Tolisso converted the penalty low into the corner.

Lyon took the lead into the break, but it was gone soon after the restart. Rennes struck through the same link-up again.

This time Al-Taamari turned provider, cutting the ball back for Esteban Lepaul to score via a deflection. It was Lepaul’s 19th Ligue 1 goal of the season.

Lyon weren’t rattled and went back in front on 52 minutes. Abner threaded a perfect through ball for Afonso Moreira, who finished first time for his second goal in three games.

Rennes made a double change with 20 minutes left and looked set to chase another equalizer, but Lyon hit them with a decisive fourth.

The home side had pressed high all night and it paid off again. Corentin Tolisso found Endrick, and the Real Madrid loanee blasted it in off the bar.

The result could prove decisive in the Champions League race. Lyon move to third with two games to play, while Rennes drop to fifth, four points back.
