Girona slipped into the relegation zone on the penultimate day of LaLiga after losing 1-0 at Atletico Madrid. The defeat stretched their winless run to seven games and kept Atlético in the hunt for third place.
With survival on the line, Girona started brightly and created two early chances in the first eight minutes. Bryan Gil cut in from the right and curled a low shot just wide, and after Atlético failed to clear a free-kick, Vitor Reis tried an overhead kick that Jan Oblak saved.
Michel was left frustrated moments later when Joel Roca’s cross found Gil six yards out, but the winger headed wide. Girona paid for those misses midway through the half.
In the 20th minute, Antoine Griezmann marked his 500th appearance and final home game for Atletico with a warning shot. He latched onto an Ademola Lookman through ball, but Paulo Gazzaniga blocked his effort from a tight angle.
A minute later, the two Atlético attackers swapped roles. Griezmann crossed for Lookman, who tapped in from close range.
Oblak stayed busy as Girona pushed back. Viktor Tsygankov and Azzedine Ounahi both tested him with decent efforts, and he tipped away Alex Moreno’s shot after a strong run.
At the other end, Gazzaniga denied Griezmann again, and Marc Pubill blazed a good chance over the bar. Tsygankov had one last opportunity before the break, but Oblak saved to keep Atletico ahead at halftime.
Girona hadn’t won away since January, so they faced an uphill task in the second half. Arnau Martínez started it with a shot that dragged across goal. Lookman replied with a similar effort moments later, and Álex Baena forced a save from Gazzaniga after a corner. Despite those chances, Girona kept Atlético pinned back.
Shortly before the hour mark, Tsygankov took the ball in stride and struck it cleanly, but his shot was straight at Oblak.
Atletico could have made Oblak’s saves less important if they’d gone 2-0 up. With 15 minutes left, Thiago Almada had the chance but tried to set up Griezmann for a farewell goal instead of shooting himself.

Griezmann missed the target Oblak made another smart stop, getting something on Ounahi’s powerful half-volley.
Diego Simeone then brought on Alexander Sorloth to give Girona’s defense more to think about. Sorloth tried a solo counter-attack, but his shot rolled just wide.
Griezmann didn’t get a farewell goal at the Estadio Metropolitano. After Oblak pulled off another top save to deny Ounahi, Atletico had done enough to secure a 1-0 win and a 15th home victory this season.
Girona are now winless in nine matches. They must beat their final opponent and rely on other results to avoid relegation.
