Goransson and King upset 16th seeds to reach French Open Second round...

Sweden’s Andre Goransson and his new partner Evan King of the United States won in straight sets in the Men’s Doubles First Round at the 2026 French Open. They defeated Brazil’s Orlando Luz and Rafael Matos 7-6, 6-3.

Goransson had never advanced past the Second Round at Roland Garros before. His prospects improved after partnering with King, who reached the semi-finals of the event last year.

The 16th seeds Luz and Matos provided stiff opposition. They broke Goransson’s serve in the second game and moved to a 3-0 lead in the first set. Unseeded Goransson and King broke back in game seven after Matos made several unforced errors while serving.

The next five games went with serve, taking the opening set to a tiebreak. A backhand winner from the Swede against serve gave him and King the advantage at 3-2. An unforced error then allowed the Brazilians to save set point.

The Swede made amends shortly after with a backhand winner off Luz’s serve. That point closed out the tiebreak 9-7 and gave the pair the first set 7-6.

The Swedish-American pair started the second set strongly. They held serve and then broke Luz’s serve after King’s forehand winner ended a 12-shot rally. That put them 2-0 up.

Neither side let up over the next six games, so Goransson was serving for the match in game nine. Despite pressure from their opponents, he and King held to win 7-6, 6-3 and move into the Second Round.

In the next round they will face Ecuador’s Diego Hidalgo and USA’s Patrik Trhac. Before that, Goransson returns to court tomorrow, Thursday 28th, to start the Mixed Doubles with Australia’s Erin Routliffe against Marcelo Arevalo and Luisa Stefani.
