EPL: Leeds Thrash Burnley to Edge Closer to Premier League Safety

Calvert-Lewin, Okafor strike as leeds crush Burnley hopes

Burnley failed to register a shot on target in the first half and suffered another heavy defeat at Elland Road.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin leads Leeds’ scoring with 12 Premier League goals this campaign...

Leeds United deepened Burnley’s woes with a 3-1 win that effectively guarantees their Premier League survival, moving nine points clear of Tottenham in the process.

Burnley, already relegated, were hoping to restore some pride, but their opening performance didn’t reflect a team fighting to save face.

Burnley were under pressure from the opening whistle and fell behind in sloppy fashion when Anton Stach’s long-range shot, which looked harmless, slipped past Martin Dubravka at the near post to give Leeds the lead.

Stach was in the thick of it again shortly after, setting up Ao Tanaka for what could have made it 2-0, but Tanaka blazed over. The German midfielder nearly cost his side moments later when he slipped in his own box, only for Jaidon Anthony to miss the chance to punish him.

Burnley’s only route back into the game seemed to be a Leeds mistake. They did grow into the half, but never looked like testing Karl Darlow.

Mike Jackson’s side looked disorganized in the first half and failed to register a single shot on target. Their 0.05 xG at the break was just above the Premier League’s record low of 0.02, narrowly avoiding another unwanted piece of history in a flat opening 45 minutes.

With Burnley offering little in attack, a second Leeds goal was always likely to kill the game off, and it arrived within 10 minutes of the restart.

Leeds came out fast after halftime, and a flowing move ended with Jayden Bogle picking out Noah Okafor, who guided a first-time finish across goal and into the far corner.

A quick third made it game over when Ao Tanaka’s stinging strike was spilled into the path of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who bundled it home from close range.

Burnley showed some fight late on, with Lucas Pires having a goal ruled out after he forced in the rebound from Bashir Humphreys’ saved effort. Loum Tchaouna then pulled one back with a powerful finish inside the box.

The goal was only a consolation. Leeds had the night, moving nine points clear of the relegation zone and all but securing safety with three matches left.
