Alexander Zverev moved into the seond round of the French Open on Sunday after beating France’s Benjamin Bonzi 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.
Playing on a hot Court Philippe Chatrier, Zverev finished the match in just over two hours against world No. 95 Bonzi on the first day of the clay Grand Slam.
Zverev took control of the opening set by breaking serve in the sixth game.
The two players traded breaks in the middle of the second set. Zverev then broke Bonzi’s serve to lead 5-4 and closed out the set with a hold to go two sets up.
With temperatures above 30C, Zverev moved quickly through the final set to secure his place in the round of 64.
“Very good start to the tournament, always nice to start with a straight-sets win,” Zverev said on-court.
“(It was) all around a good performance, very happy with the start.”

The 29-year-old German, seeded second, will face Czech Tomas Machac next. Machac advanced earlier with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 win over Belgium’s Zizou Bergs.
Russia’s Karen Khachanov also reached the second round after a straight-sets victory against French wildcard Arthur Gea.

Czech 26th seed Jakub Mensik produced a similarly quick result against another French wildcard, Titouan Droguet. The 20-year-old won 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
