The Carolina Hurricanes are headed back to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in two decades. They closed out Montreal 6-1 in Game 5 on Friday to punch their ticket.

With the win, Carolina moves to a perfect 10-0 all-time when they take a 3-1 lead in a best-of-seven series.

Frederik Andersen is off to his first Stanley Cup Final. The Carolina netminder has allowed two goals or fewer in 12 of his 13 playoff starts this spring, with three shutouts mixed in.

He stopped 23 shots in Game 5 vs Montreal - the most he faced from them in the series - and surrendered only five goals total across the five games.

For Montreal, the run ends here. The Canadiens reached the East Final after pulling off consecutive Game 7 wins in the first two rounds.

Next up for Carolina: the Vegas Golden Knights in the 2026 Stanley Cup Final. Puck drops on Game 1 Tuesday, June 2nd.

Recap and Highlights

After Montreal’s challenge for goalie interference didn’t go their way, Taylor Hall struck for his 5th goal of the playoffs. That put Carolina up 1-0 just before the midpoint of the opening period.

Logan Stankoven picked up his 2nd assist of the postseason, with Jackson Blake adding his 10th. The pair set up Hall’s go-ahead tally.

Carolina’s formula works: when they score first at home in a series-clincher, they’re now 6-0 all-time.

Just six minutes after Hall’s opener, Carolina made it 2-0. The goal came on their 13th shot of the period, while Montreal still hadn’t managed more than three shots themselves.

Stankoven netted his 9th of the playoffs, this time finishing after setting up Hall earlier.

Hall then flipped roles and grabbed his 10th assist of the run. Alexander Nikishin also picked up a helper for his first career playoff point.

Carolina didn’t let up. Less than two minutes later they made it 3-0 before the first buzzer, putting the game firmly out of reach.

Eric Robinson buried his 3rd goal of the playoffs, with William Carrier earning his 3rd assist.

That marked two straight games with a 3-goal first period for the Hurricanes. They went to intermission up 15-4 in shots and 10-5 in hits.

The second period started the same way the first ended - with Montreal struggling to keep up. The Canadiens looked outmatched in every area coming out of the locker room.

Blake turned setup man into scorer this time. After helping Hall on the opening goal, he buried his own rebound for his 5th goal of the playoffs. That made it 4-0 for Carolina midway through the second.

Hall picked up his 11th assist and Stankoven added his 3rd on Blake’s goal. At 22, Blake was finishing off a game that was already out of reach.

Carolina added insult to injury on their fourth power play of the night.

Shayne Gostisbehere was the one who delivered this time, scoring his 2nd goal of the postseason to push the Hurricanes’ lead to 5-0.

Seth Jarvis tallied his 5th assist and Nikolaj Ehlers - the Game 2 hero - chipped in his 5th helper as well.

Montreal finally broke through late when Cole Caufield scored his 6th goal of the playoffs on their fifth power play. But with a big cushion, Carolina coasted through the third period and booked their trip to the Stanley Cup Final against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Seth Jarvis sealed it with his 3rd goal of the postseason into an empty net, making the final 6-1.

It’s Carolina’s first trip to the Final since 2006 - the year they won their only Stanley Cup. For Vegas, it’ll be their third Final appearance in just nine years as a franchise.

Game 1 of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final between the Hurricanes and Golden Knights is set for June 2nd.
